I’m on day 4 (total of 8 shots) of 0.5 insulin of lantus for my cat. He vomited day one after his second dose and after day 4 after his pm shot.

should I be worried? What do I do?

How long was the vomiting after he finished eating?
Did you change the type of food recently?
I fed him around 8pm and found the puke around 7 hours later (3:30am) so sometime in between there.
I fed him a little bit and tested him at 6:30am and he was 16.4. I am still going to give him his 0.5 units of lantus. But am a bit concerned about the vomiting, although not sure if it’s just his body getting used to it or…

I haven’t changed his food at all. Still giving him fancy feast

It is not usually for cats to vomit from insulin. I would offer small amounts and see if he can keep that down. I’m glad to you gave the dose of insulin. Try and get a test one sometime before you go to bed.

I do think i am feeding him a bit more than normal, so maybe i am feeding him too much? But he keeps asking for it.. i'm also mixing in a lot of water with his food.. not sure if thats it or what... i guess all i can do is hope he stops puking?

Are you feeding only two meals a day? If so I would try dividing the meals so less is eaten in each sitting.

The larger volume of of food (since it now includes a lot of water) may be the cause especially you only feed two meals.

i feed him one can of fancy feast in the AM after his insulin shot, then a few hours later i feed him half a can of FF, then a few hours later i feed the rest of the can, and then give him a full can in the PM after his insulin shot.

i also give him pure bites treats after i test or attempt to test.

Is that a normal amount of food? i mean he could probably even eat more he always wants food. before he was diabetic i would leave out dry food and give about one can of wet food a day

How is the cat's weight doing? If gaining weight you should feed less unless you want the cat to lose weight. If cat is at desired weight then you are feeding the right amount. If losing weight then feed more. As a cat get BG under control the amount of food needed should decrease.

he has lost weight, that was the first sign and reason i brought him to the vet to be diagnosed with diabetes.

he's about 10lbs now but his ideal weight would be about 14lbs, so should i be feeding more? I'm not sure if that's the reason he has been puking and what i can do to stop the puking :(

I would say that if he's underweight you should not worry about how much he is eating, until he's regulated you could just give him as much as he wants so long it is low carb, once he's regulated and starts regaining some weight ( he may not regain all that he lost but enough to get to a healthy weight ) you will probably need to control that more

It seems he's puking only during the night am I right?

If it is so he may be having some stomach acid during the night you could try and give him a little bit less after the shot and leave the rest out for him when you go to bed to eat during the night whenever he wants that could help, even though is wet food it usually stays ok for a few hours ( more than enough for him to eat) unless it is unusually hot where you live

Your right it does seem to be at night.

if I put the wet food down he’ll eat it all. Dry food he could graze on but wet food he’ll eat it in one sitting normally, especially those small cans of fancy feast. Should I still try to give him a bit less at night? Sometimes I find if he’s hungry in the middle of the night he wakes me up, which is fine but I need to get as much sleep as I can since I’m almost 9 months pregnant. Do you think the best option would be to just wake up in the middle of the night and feed him a bit more?

Have you thought about an automatic timed feeder which you can set to the times you want him to get the food?
A lot of us have them and they are invaluable.
I'm not sure which ones are available in Canada but the petsafe ones are available in the US

Having auto feeders makes things a lot easier. I am in Canada and was able to get the Petsafe5 from Amazon. I like it because it is battery powered with electronic timer and has 5 spaces. I also purchased the Petsafe2 with two spots, but didn’t like it because it was one of those dial timers (think old kitchen timer) so I ended up just getting the larger one for both my cats. Makes getting a good night’s sleep easier, as well as when I leave to go to work, or even a vacay ;). I can set multiple times/snacks.

Day 6 of insulin and he has puked again. He has puked every other day, always at night. I give him his shot at 7am and 7pm and he just puked at 1am. I tested him after and he was 13.8.

I don’t know what to do since he’s been puking every other day I’ve been trying to see some sort of consistency or pattern or something I’m changing but I gave him just one can of fancy feast before bed

any other tips?!?! I want to say I’d call my vet but they aren’t even helpful. I haven’t even told them I’ve started insulin, I have simply learned everything from here and started on my own at a small dose of 0.5u of lantus

any help would be greatly appreciated!

When he vomits at night, is he bringing up solids, or is it just bile?

I can't remember if you're testing for ketones or not, but if you aren't you should start doing that.

If he wasn't previously eating Fancy Feast, it's possible it's not agreeing with him. You might want to try a different protein to see if that helps.

He has been eating fancy food for a a couple of weeks before starting insulin

the puke is just liquid and the colour of his wet food. I have been mixing his wet food with water to increase his water intake too.

I haven’t tested for ketones and to be honest I’m nervous to add ANOTHER test and process to all of this. I’m finding it very overwhelming and scared to have to figure out another test process and what do I even do if it’s positive. This is all a lot and some ppl I have talked to don’t even test BG at home or test for ketones so I don’t know if I’ll be stressing myself out more if I add another thing to all of this I’m feeling overwhelmed, sad, stressed… concerned…

If it’s just bile and it’s only happening middle of the night/early morning, it’s possible it’s just a buildup of acid in his stomach. Other members told me that’s a not in common thing with diabetic cats. I had a similar issue which I solved by adding a small meal in the middle of the night, a couple of hours before Pumpkin would normally vomit. It helps to have an automatic feeder for that.

Testing for ketones is really easy. You get some ketone test strips and dip it in a urine sample, and then compare the color of the strip to a legend on the container. Getting the urine sample can be a little trickier, but there’s plenty of advice on the forum.

I know this is all quite a bit, but the payoff is a better chance of Molson getting better. The more information you have, the better you can figure out how to get him back to normal while keeping him safe. And there are lots of people on the forum to help you with whatever challenges you run into.

Okay maybe I will try getting up in the middle of the night to feed him or I’ll look into an automatic feeder. So was your cat also puking and then they stopped after you fed more frequently? It is strange that it’s always in the middle of the night. Throughout the day I give him a breakfast lunch and dinner.l, but to your point I haven’t given him food in the middle of the night

I can’t seem to find a video on how to get the urine to test for ketones. Do you have any to share? What do I do if it’s positive? How can I prevent it ?

Pumpkin puked a lot when she was young, so I've been giving her small meals throughout the day for most of her life. The morning bile vomit was new after her diagnosis. It was happening every 4-5 days. I changed up her diet a bit and added the early morning meal and since then I've only seen the early morning vomit every 3-4 weeks.

I followed the advice here: https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/best-way-to-collect-urine.268854/ The ladle technique worked for me, but I think it might be easier for girl cats?

If it's positive, some experienced members will guide through everything you need to do. I don't have any experience with ketosis so I stick to tagging in folks who do.

You're already doing the right things to prevent it: following an insulin dosing protocol, giving plenty of healthy food, and giving plenty of fluids. The only thing I'm not sure I remember is whether Molson is getting more food than he needed before his diagnosis. Until his BG is regulated, he needs more food, so something up to at least 1.5x his normal calorie is pretty normal and helps make sure he's getting the nutrition he needs.

For your description it looks like is only stomach acid which is usually more common during the night, I hope you can find one of those time feeders so that you can leave food out for him, you could split what you usually give him before going to sleep into the openings you the feeder you find has one or two maybe.

One more thing you could try is giving her SEB (Slypery Elm Bark) just before going to sleep, I've used it for years now with one of my civies ( non diabetic ) and it really helps a lot with stomach acid ( and other things like constipation too), SEB is sold as a powder and you can prepare a kind of syrup that you can keep in the fridge ( I actuall keep in it in a small baby bottle) and give her 2ml at night here's a link with more information about it and how to prepare the syrup, the instructions are for 1 cup but I prepare it in the microwave and I only prepare 1/4 cup that has been enough for only 1 cat and giving it only at night
