2/25 Snuggles AMPS-150/112+2/88+3/283+5(emergency vet visit)/91+9.5/PMPS-79/82+2/83+3/74+4/93+5.25

Snuggles had an emergency vet appointment. She has had black stools for two days. On day 1 vet said to monitor next stool and last night her stool was black again. Her blood work was fine, no increased temperature, and no other symptoms. She was prescribed Carafate and Famotidine for possible ulcer.

Labs look good. How many days of the Carafate? I hope you won’t have problems getting her to take it. No x-ray? I know that you were concerned about a foreign body ingestion. I hope her stool will return to normal very soon.
The vet said she’s not having a lot of throwing up or constipation so she wasn’t concerned with foreign body ingestion or obstruction. I told her whatever she needed I’m fine with and not to worry about the cost. This vet told me it was good to see she’s on Lantus and the reason they don’t prescribe it is because of the cost! She’s on Carafate 1/4 tab twice daily..for 16 doses. She does not like it..I did a slurry and syringe. I just gave 1/2 Famotidine and she does not like that either..started drooling a little when she ate it in her food. The vet was boggled because the only symptom is the black stool.

Yes. I’m wondering if it’s just the virus I mentioned that my cats have had recently with black stool. How many mg of famotidine is that? I only have given 1/4 of a 10 mg pepcid AC (famotidine) to my cats before… so 2.5 mg. I suppose the larger dose is due to a suspected ulcer?

1/2 tab..5mg. She isn’t liking the Famotidine..won’t eat what’s left on her plate once she got a taste. It’s really mind boggling because she’s playing and no other problems besides the black stool..very stinky. I’m happy the vet couldn’t find anything wrong but still confusing. I will update the vet end of next week. This vet was so much knowledgeable than the last one we saw.

I used size 5 for Perry, smaller than size 4 even if I had to grind up the pill to fit it into the capsule

I managed to get some size 4 gel caps from a local compounding pharmacy, and size 5 (just a few to tide me over) from the local specialty vet clinic. A little quicker than waiting for Amazon. Famotidine is bitter! I've seen people get it in liquid, not sure it tastes any better.

Sandy, I was just thinking of what you said about your vet not prescribing Lantus because of the cost. You should let him/her know when you can that there are several generic forms of Lantus (insulin glargine) available at a much lesser cost than brand name Lantus. Perhaps they will start prescribing it more and this will help a lot of people and cats.

I keep all sizes of gelcaps here that my cats can take 2, 3, 4, and 5. You probably won’t fit the pepcid into a 5 unless you crush it. Very small. Some people are able to mask a pill in a pill pocket, or some cream cheese, or liverwurst, or some favorite food or baby food, and get the animal to eat the pill inside the gelatin capsule. But since you’re going to have Snugs for a long time, it might be worth getting yourself a piller and starting to try to learn how to give her pills because you may need to one day, Of course, I do not know how difficult she is about things like that!

I’m going to try a few tricks with her pill tonight. See how it goes! :nailbiting:
