AMPS: 493. Day 3 Lantus!

Still on that bounce
Found a couple little spit spots this AM (definitely a Lando thing he does when he's hungry!) He's been camped out by the back door where we keep his food on a shelf... Been yelling for food hourly and whatever I give him just isn't enough :( he must be feeling the effects of the bounce!

But surprise, I'm off today! So even though I can't really run a "curve" yet, what I can do is see if I can gather some data for where his Nadir is, even though he's bouncing!
Should I check every 2 hours or every hour?
I won't be off until next Saturday so this is my only chance to gather some data for over a week!

Much love to everyone, have a lovely Friday <3

You could start with a +2 and if he is lower, then it means it could be an active cycle. Normally a test every 2 hours is okay. But if it's super-active cycle with lower numbers like 2 nights back, you might have to test ever hour.

That's great to know, thank you!
The Lantus cycle is new for us so the more I can learn the better :) I'll test him at +2 and we'll see how he's doing.
So for reference, what is it specifically mean when you say, "active cycle"? I assume it means that his numbers are trending down, and a very active cycle means that he's REALLY shot down like the other night? Would there be times when his cycle isn't very active and he just sits pretty around the same numbers all 12 hours?

Yes, a "normal" Lantus cycle is a gentle curve - down to the nadir and up again after. Bounce breaking cycles can be more exciting with more downward momentum and later nadirs. Unregulated cats often see cycles with quite a bit of diving and bouncing. As their bodies get used to lower numbers, the bouncing reduces and the curves become "flatter". In cycles where they are bouncing numbers can be flat and high.

With Lantus (Glargine) a +2 is usually a good indicator of how the cycle is going to pan out:
  • If the +2 is around the same as the PS, it's going to be a pretty normal cycle....gradually down to nadir and then gradually back up to the next PS.
  • If the +2 is a lot higher than the PS, that means there's a bounce starting and it's OK to take a break from tests.
  • If the +2 is a lot lower than the PS, that's an early indicator that numbers might head a lot lower and you need to get some more tests later in the cycle.
Of course, some cats have an onset later in the cycle like +2.5 or +3. In that case, a test at +2.5 or +3 would be a better indicator than a +2.

OMG this is the best information ever! Thank you SO much for explaining this to me, I REALLY needed this! I'm going to print your comment out so I always have this as a reference. So helpful while learning Lantus. I'll probably get a test here in a little bit just to see how he's doing :)

Some people buy freeze dried treats to feed in between meals. These won't affect BG and can tide him over until his next meal.
We buy that but I usually just boil chicken breast and shred it up and give that as a snack through the week! I work in a meat market so it's easy and cheap for us :) it's just not enough to hold him over. I mean he wants a giant meal every hour I've been putting extra water in his pate to help him feel fuller for longer.
