Eddie hasn’t really wanted to eat for a few days, on Saturday evening his bg was quite low (3.1) and I obviously freaked out and gave him honey etc. I got it back up to 9, no insulin on saturday evening or sunday morning. He was kind of normal on sunday until he threw up in the evening. I gave him honey, cat malt and butter to make him eat on Saturday (he didn’t want to because of low BG) and thought maybe he was just feeling nauseous because of those. I could hear his stomach rumbling.

On Monday morning (yesterday) he was a bit listless but even more so when I came home later, he didn’t want to eat again so I took him to the vet. No ketoacidosis etc, he got some anti-nauseous medicine and they took blood test for pancreatis and I got the result back this morning that it was negative. He ate a bit in the evening yesterday and a bit during the night but now he feels off again, doesn’t want to eat, not even treats and in general he’s very greedy. His BG was around 10, I didn’t give insulin just to be safe. He is hiding under the bed now.

I will call the vet again, just wondering if anybody has any ideas what it could be.

Thanks.

I would not keep skipping doses of insulin. Especially if he is not eating. I’m very glad to had the ketones checked and had a pancreatitis test done. Even if he is not eating you should be able to give a 1/2 dose of insulin. Not eating and not giving insulin is inviting ketones into the picture.
If you have antinaisea meds at home I would give those regularly to him for a few days. try him with any food…don’t worry if it is not low carb. When cats won’t eat…eating any food is better than not eating.
I would take him back to the vet again if he continues to not eat.

Most cats will want to eat if the BG is low so something must be going in.
SUGGESTIONS TO STIMULATE KITTIES APPETITE

Is Eddie amenable to syringe feeding? If so I would syringe feed him and try to get the equivalent of one 5.5 oz can day into Eddie. I have done that with many of my cats. Some for short time and for one it was years.

I skipped this morning’s dose because he didn’t seem to want to eat, he did get 0,25 units last night. He is on Tresiba which is super long-acting. There were no ketones yesterday, I will definitely keep following the dr’s advice.

He is now with the vet for blood and x-rays, hoping for the best but I am very worried. It’s so hard when they don’t tell you how they feel. He didn’t have fever. I have a really good doctor who knows so much about diabetes and is very good diagnostician outside of that too but I always fear.

Yes, I’m aware! It’s quite common here and it’s very long-acting. I have a very good vet who recommended it and she is quite hands on, I often email her Eddie’s BG sheet if I need advice.
That’s good to hear…. and interesting that it is common in Finland.

I don’t know if it’s common everywhere but with this doctor, I also volunteer for a foster group and she got one of the foster cats’ diabetes in remission in a few months. She also has a db cat of her own. So glad I found her, I wouldn’t actually be surprised if she reads this message board

So far it seems Eddie might have an inflammation in his gall bladder which I think is treatable. Still waiting for some results, I really hope it would be ”only” that.
