1/21 Marley AMPS 320, +2 274, PMPS 251, +2 168, +3 188

Ive been offered three days work....in my old career....away.

Its really one day and a day of travel either side which could be amazing because if all goes well, (I know it doesnt always!) but I could try and leave later after the pm shot the travel day, and then travel through the night after the day, so only really be away for two shots.

I still haven't trained up my niece. She is the niece that lost her dad (to the vaccine) and its been a really very hard year for her. She is amazing, I am so proud of how she has coped but what a hard thing to cope with at 16. She sometimes just cant cope - so I am not sure I can rely on her for this, so I would have to find and train someone else....but at this stage I really do have to - financially.......so I think I'm going to have to sy yes...terrifying.....

Its 16th of feb and a travel day either side so I have a bit of time to prepare.....

That's great!

When we travel and have sitters giving insulin, we reduce the dose to a vacation dose. Many sitters can shoot but not test. We can decide the vacation dose a 2-3 days before you have to leave.

Oh wow so do you think it would be safe to just organise for shooting and not for testing then?

Because I was thinking I needed to do say a shoot fee, which I was thinking would be an hours work payment. Really when you know how it takes 15 mins to set up feeders and fill needle and give shot. But Marley might be tricky with them and it might take them ages to fill the syringe, so it could take 30 mins to an hour! But then I thought I could fill yhr needles and so they only have to do the actual shot.

So I was thinking an hours pay for the shot, Especially if they have to drive 15 minutes to get to my house and then 15 mins to get back home. .......

And then testing I would say another hour to get a +3 and a Plus 4

And then I was thinking I would need to ask them to keep the next hour free, so I might have to pay then a third hour. Because you cant really ask someone not to work elsewhere if you aren't going to pay them.

Which would mean I'd need to do all that again in the evening. So that would basically be 6 hours work.

And then who would want to get up at 530 am for one hours work in the freezing col winter? (I actually give the shot at 5.50 am and pm at the moment so that I can get in a +3 before my morning yoga classes I teach - so I know whether to ask my mum to come and be with Marley in case of hypo).

So do you pay your sitters in terms of injecting?

How did you find them?

Would be a hell of a lot easier if I could just get someone to do the morning and evening shots without the testing in between.......

Yes. Many sitters cannot test. The times I have travelled in the last year, the sitter could not test. Usually they come only twice a day though arrangements vary between pet parents and sitters. You would just keep him a lower dose so that there is no danger of him dropping low.

Unfortunately you can't prefill syringes with insulin. The lubricant in the syringes can cause the insulin to degrade after the first 24 hours (I think). So if you are leaving at night you could possibly prefill the syringe for the next morning but not much beyond that. Maybe 2 shots at best. What we suggest is to prefill a syringe with coloured water as a reference for the sitter.

What you can do is move the shot time for those 2-3 days to a little later. Say 7-7:30 am/pm? So the sitter doesn't have to come at an unearthly hour.

I found the sitter through a local cat group on FB. There is a UK based feline diabetes group on FB. You could check there. In the US there are some websites where you can find sitters. I'm sure there must be some in the UK as well.

Oh my goodness this sounds much more doable.

I m getting ahead of myself here but I have been offered 2-3 weeks work in March/April time. How long can you keep the lower dose thing going for?

Oh my goodness I had no idea there was lubricant in syringes, how horrid. Thank you for telling me.

That is a good idea but the only thing is, the shot the night before. I was hoping to do it and then drive 5 hours to my place of work. The later I shoot, the later I drive and thats a bit dangerous driving tired at night and then having to do a hell of a day the next day when I will likely have to get up myself at 4 am. I guess I'll see, maybe ill have to ask the sitter to do that evening shot too at a later time.

Oh wow so helpful thank you. I have requested to join, just waiting for being accepted.

I understand it differs from place to place, but is there any idea what you might pay per injection?

You can keep it for 2-3 weeks as well! But more importantly, will Marley be okay alone for that long? Or will he be staying with your mum/sis/niece?

Yes. Might be a better idea to get the sitter to do the PM shot as well. You could gradually move the shot later in the 2-3 days before you leave when you start the vacation dose. Anyway, let's take a call a week before you leave. A lot can change between now and then!

I have no clue about rates in the US and UK. What I pay here in India will be very different considering exchange rate etc.

I'd be home at the weekends for sure and likely home every night. Also likely I could do the morning shot it I got him on the right schedule. But as I wouldnt be there to monitor the BG in terms of testing, id have to give the lower vacation dose. So I was really just checking that it would be safe to give the vacation dose for that length of time. Though if I didn't have to work Saturdays nd Sundays maybe I could give the full dose those days? Or best to keep consistent with vacation dose?
It willl be a knackering few weeks with long travel times but its only 3 weeks and I need the work!

Ok, thank you so so so much. This feels life changing news!!

Yes silly question really, ill ask in the Facebook group.

Thank you so much!!

So at +3, having gone up to 188, that would be a signal I dont need to test more right? (I mean, if it was daytime, it would be interesting to get a _7 but I'll be sleeping!)

Yes. Looks like a flat cycle. In the day you could have gotten a later test to see if he is up to anything later in the cycle, but no need to stay up at night.
