Furball is still not eating very much. I'm getting really worried about her. I have some cerenia pills from last year. I gave her 1/2 a tablet this morning. She licks the food a little bit and then turns her head away. Thanks for the prayers and good wishes.

Sorry Furrball is worrying you. Sending positive vibes. Feel better sweet Furball. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I took Furball to the vet this morning. There's no clear answer for why she doesn't want to eat. They gave me some Cerenia, Mirtazapine and another course of the antibiotic. Does anyone know if it's safe to give more than one dose of Cerenia per day? Since I gave the old dose this morning, I don't want to give her some of the new pills unless it's safe. They also gave me some Hills AD canned food to try syringe feeding if she still won't eat. She licked a little food when I got home from the vet. I'm holding off on the Hills right now.

I used to give Whiskey half in the evening and, if she wasn't eating better by the morning, the other half in the morning - it did quite often help to do it that way :bighug:, hope Furball feels better soon.

Also, ask your vet to check liver values - it turns out that most of the time Whiskey didn't want to eat it was because her liver was on it's way out - something I really wish I had figured out on time.

Thanks. Furball had bloodwork done on Dec. 2. Everything was good.

If there is nausea involved have you considered trying ondansetron? It’s much more effective for nausea for a lot of cats.

Feel better, Furball!

I hadn't thought about it. I just started the cerenia. I'm hoping it will help. I don't know if the vet will give me ondansetron. I'll ask if the cerenia doesn't work. Thanks.
It’s a usually also lot cheaper than cerenia.

I wonder if her mouth is still bothering her.

I hope she feels better! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I have a call in to the vet about the ondansetron. She's still not interested in eating so I syringe fed a little of the Hill's. I'll try more tonight if she still won't eat.

Ondansetron (in my experience and opinion) is way better for nausea than Cerenia. Cerenia is great if vomiting is part of the picture. Is Furball showing any other signs of nausea?

As for Cerenia, what does Furball weigh, and what size is the tablet?

@Wendy&Neko Furball weights 9 lbs. The Cerenia is a 16 mg tablet. The vet said to give 1/2 a tablet once a day. She is not vomiting. She is turning her head away from food when I offer it. She did swallow the food I syringed and keep it down. I haven't heard back from the vet about the Ondansetron. I'm hoping I can get some. Thanks.

Dosing of Cerenia is about 1 mg/lb of cat per day, so sounds like she's had her daily dose already. Did you ask the vet whether the pills would still be good if that old?

The vet doesn't have to give you ondansetron, just a prescription for it that you can fill at a human pharmacy.

Turning her head away from food does sound nauseous. How are the rest of her 5 P's?

@Wendy&Neko I have a message in to the vet requesting a script for the ondansetron. I didn't get a call back and they're closed now. Hopefully tomorrow. She's not moving much. She's just laying in her bed and gets up to drink and use the litter. She has purred for me some when I'm petting her. She doesn't feel very good overall. I didn't think to mention the old Cerenia to the vet.

Sending well wishes to my poor little furball and to you Carla. For Lando, Cerenia seems to keep him on track ( ive only ever given him 1/2 tablet in 24 hrs). He is an 17.8 lb cat btw. Recently after he stopped eating again, miritaz REALLY worked. I dosed him for 4 days and when i stopped his appetite went from high to medium. Hope this helps you make your decision

Hi Carla -- I 'm so sorry that sweet Furball is not feeling well. :( About cerenia vs. ondansetron, I'm not an expert by any means, but there is a ton of information about both on the Feline SCL forum that I used to belong to (and technically still do). I remembered reading that they blocked different neuroreceptors and could be given simultaneously; also that most vets tend to prescribe significantly less than the recommended dosage of ondasetron. I popped over to the SCL forum just now to check my facts and found this:

I don't know if you can see this without joining the group, so let me know if not and I'll copy it for you. It's an 11-page PDF.

I'm skimming the report now and remembering another oft-repeated fact from the SCL forum, which is that while both cerenia and ondansetron prevent vomiting, ondansetron is much more effective against nausea (90% effective vs. 25% for cerenia). Its duration is only 4 to 6 hours, though -- which is good to know, because apparently most vets say to give it once or twice a day. That's not enough.

Again, I am no expert, so please rely on others who know more.
