Newly diagnosed AMPS of 216 after giving food, okay to shoot?

Hi everyone. My recently diagnosed kitty bear has been having some lower numbers the past day or so (which is great). But now I’m finding it hard to tell when it’s okay to shoot. He was low this morning about an hour ago (89) so supplemented with some higher carb food and be shot to 216. He is due for his shot in 20 minutes. Is he okay to shoot at this level? I’ll be taking him to work with me so can monitor him all day. Thank you so much for your help!

UPDATE: He’s up to 242 so I’m thinking it’s okay?

Wow! 89 without insulin! What was his BG value at time of diagnosis? Was your baby on dry food at that time? How long on the Purina Pro Plan DM?

I'm not a moderator... just looked at Bear's SS. 89 is safe to shoot. Was it way too early to shoot when you tested the 89? Higher carb food is needed when under 50. Glad to hear you have the hypo food! Use it when needed, but you were good to go ahead and shoot.... as long as you were available to test and treat with Higher carb food of needed.

Wait until you hear from a moderator! While I'm not new, sometimes I feel new to this.

Your Bear is beautiful.

The 89 was after a few weeks on insulin. He’s gone much lower. You can see my spreadsheet in my signature! He has been on the PP for about two weeks as well, since he was first diagnosed. We are switching over to Weruva soon.

With TR you can shoot any number over 50 (on a human meter) provided you can monitor. Looks like you can monitor and he has zoomed up quite a bit after food, so you should be okay to shoot.
Get a test again before you shoot?

I finally looked. Sorry about that. I just woke up and did the Test~Feed~Shoot routine. Still need breakfast myself and a little coffee.

Bear is doing so good! So are you. Look st all those BG results!

No worries at all! Numbers are hard before coffee lol. Thank you! Makes me feel much better about all of this. Maybe someday I will stop worrying about him 24/7. He was at 251 so I went ahead and shot. He’ll be at the office with me all day so can monitor constantly.

What is Bear's age? Put that in your signature, and let the SS indicate date of diagnosis since that's already there. Cool that you can bring Bear to work! Is this something he was accustomed?

Thanks! He is 11. We picked up him about 2 weeks ago with the rescue I work with. Somewhat of a surprise neglect case. I work for the KONG Company so it is a cat/dog friendly work place :)

Hi Meredith,
I’m not usually online this early but woke up early. Did you say you got 89 at +11 then fed higher carb food and then the Preshot was 216?
Remember not to feed for the 2 hours Preshot as we don’t want the Preshot BG to be food influenced.
I see he bounced after the green yesterday but come back down by the end of the pm cycle so he didn’t bounce for long.

Hi! Yes, that is correct. So if he is low Preshot I should wait until he rises naturally in order to determine whether or not to give him his shot?

If he has a lower than normal preshot you stall, don’t feed and test again in 20 minutes to see if the BG is rising. Also post and ask for help. We don’t want the preshot BG food influenced because if you artificially raise it with food to shoot, it could drop after the high carb food wears off.

I just re-read this. That makes sense. Thank you for clarifying.

Hey, hows bear doing? He still has that vet appt soon to see about the kidneys right?
Hi! Thanks for checking in! Bear is doing pretty well and has some lower numbers. He’s been a little sluggish the past few days but perked up a bit this evening. Hard to tell if it’s because he’s an older cat or because of something else. But numbers are trending in the right direction! He is hungry as ever. We met with our vet on Monday and said he’s looking good. You’re right - we meet with the specialist next Monday for more advanced info on his kidneys.

Great! You’re really amazing for helping this poor cat. Thanks for giving him a chance to be happy and healthy.

We love him so much! I’m really hoping he is able to pull through and have a good quality of life. He’s really been through it, poor guy.
What’s his story? Was he a stray? I’m sure every minute with you is like a spa day compared to what his life has been!

I found him on cat Facebook marketplace. Lol. His previous owner was a hospice nurse who got him from a patient who passed away. He was the patient’s son’s cat who killed himself. The hospice nurse was moving to a place that didn’t allow pets. I picked him up and he was skin and bones and wobbly. I knew something was wrong. She said she never thought he was sick, just old. Who knows the last time he went to the vet. She did love him though. Just didn’t get him the care he needed.
