Hi to all,

Sorry for my Eng first. Im located in Europe- Czech republic.

My cat Pani Mi had acute kidney failure and now has stable CKD beginning stage. Pani Mi is 11yo and she is indoor cat. Since she was 2yo she had struvite problem so she was on urinary food. After crash we switched to RC renal loaf (higher carbs)-mostly this last month and RC aging food-wet. She also started to have seizures so she is on phenaemaletten 2x a day. Her phos, crea, urea lvls are mostly stable and in 1.stage of ckd. She has 6,8kg now. After crash she had 5kg than whole time 6,1-3kg.She is fat i know :/ Last month she started to eat more and was hungry all the time so i give her few kibbles a day. She gained weight. I ve noticed that she started to drink more. I thought it was bc of kibbles so i switched again to wet and it was better but still little bit more than it used to be. I read several articles so i bought glucometr. Her fructosamin was 345 (250-350) in summer.

Vet recommended to do glucose curve so i did it today and im not wise from it. My vet will explain it to me tommorow.
Glucose range in cz 3,5-6,5
8am before eat 15,4 meal at 8.10am
10am13,6
12am 3 few kibbles at 12 45
14pm 1,5 14.10 wet food
16pm 2,5. 16.45 3tsp of wet
18pm 11
20pm 10,3

Urine- glucose negative, ketones negative.
I hope this dissbalbce could be from fat and it will be okay again without new meds. I ordered RC ageing 12+ in jelly which has less carbs 12 and also still good protein and phos bc of ckd.

Could please give me some advices and recommendation for other food i could buy in europe?

Thank you all,

Alena

Welcome, Alena. Waving from Canada.

At the end of this food list, you can find low carb EU options. Many people have ordered from zooplus.

You will also have to check the phosphorus levels of the foods.

It's a balance act but diabetes and CKD can be managed. I did it and so have many others.

Low phosphorus and low carb food (some people make their own from raw ingredients plus a supplement). Or a phosphorus binder can be added to the food (though it is usually started at Stage 2). Phosphorus binders from the vet (at least in North America) contain sugar so aluminum hydroxide powder is used instead. More about that here:

Phosphorus

This site is the bible for CKD.

If Pani Mi has not been started on insulin yet, it is important for you and your vet to read the following links.

Other members will be along to help. (Your English is very good.)

Hi Red and thank you,

Pani's phos is okay for now like 1,1-1,5. So no binder needed yet-but i already ordered RX phos bind (aluminium hydroxide) from USA just to be prepared :)

Im already in Tanya's group-great ppl there :) I recieved a lot of help there. So ofcourse im still learning everything but im using this web very often.

So im going to read what you send now. Unfortunatelly none of listed food are here in CZ :/

Thanks again,

Alena

So i did some digging and i could buy these which are from zoohit. I found it elswhere. But still there is not written how much phos it contains and i dont understand protein..( i know i should have phos max 0,8% and protein 35%)...

Phos is listed for some of the foods in the UK Food List (low phos foods are in bold). For the others, try going to the manufacturer's website and look up the phos percentages.

Is raw an option? According to her spreadsheet, @Marina & Chico feeds raw.

An interesting discussion on CKD/diabetes raw:
Perhaps some of the US foods listed on Tanya's website are available to you through zoohit.
  • US Canned Food Data In Order of Phosphorus Content (%) Based on Dry Matter Analysis (DMA) - Tanya's CKD website (7/2020 - 7/2022)

Just a reminder. Switching to a low carb diet can drop overall number by up to 5.5 (100 is US numbers – multiply by 18 and this will affect the insulin dosing.
When will Pani Mi be starting insulin? It's not a good idea to do both at the same time. The dose could be too high. If you tell us the type of insulin and the amount, we can help you figure out the finer details.

My vet didnt offer insulin yet. He didnt confirm diabetes. I think he maybe run some other tests. I want to try manage it with food at first. Or is it bad idea? He was out of office today so he has to take a look at curve at first. Or is itbad idea?

It is not a bad idea to switch your Pani Mi over to a wet low carb diet before trying insulin. I would do a food switch over the course of a few weeks (about two weeks) and I would take blood glucose readings during this time to see how she does. Then you will know if she can be a diet controlled diabetic cat ... or not. And you will know if she needs insulin. Best wishes!

Hi Suzanne,

This exactly i would like to try :) I have to wait when all new food will come and than i will start with glucose readings and we will see. I could always start with insulin... Of course just if she stay okay without any problems. Thank you for support ❤️

I would not start with insulin. A cat who is already on insulin and then has his/her food transitioned to low carb will definitely get lower blood glucose readings. So the safest course of action is to do the food trial and testing first. I hope it goes really well. Keep us posted on how it is going! We are all supporting you and Pani Mi.

Good morning from CZ,

Could you please recommend dry food-low phos low carbs for Pani Mi. I just need some backup when i will be longer time away from home.

Im feeding now just with wet food. I found one which is 6-12% of carbs and also suitable for ckd. I know the reason why she has this glucose problems-she ate 2months rc renal food 22% carbs so her glucose raised and she gained weight... I hope this food will solve it. She urinates little bit more and she us drinking more. Not so much but more. No glucose and ketones in urine. I havent time this week to do the curve but im doing tests at morning and its dropping. Today 7 (126).

Thank you all

I’m glad you are testing foe ketones in the urine while you are doing the swap over to low carb food.
Have you thought about an automatic timed feeder for when you are away. You can put wet food in them.
To get help regarding low carb dry food in CR, I would change you subject line to

Hi Bron and thank you,
i have 3 catsabdlnd they have sure feed all of them- bc all have different food. So time feeder would be great but others will steal it from her :(

I will order from amazon or ebay so it could be from everywhere in Europe...

Im feeding her now 5-6 a day (heading to 210-220kcal) but she is always hungry and bagging for food. Its really torturing me. She started to sleep near her food bowls. Its weird :(

It's OK to feed your cat more especially if you notice she's losing weight. If, in fact, she's diabetic, she will be hungry much of the time. I would suggest checking to see if there is a difference in the amount of calories you were feeding Pani Mi when you were giving her the RC food versus what you're feeding her now. In many cases, food that's higher in carbohydrates has more calories than low carbohydrate food.

She gained weight and she is fat. I want her to lose weight

Actually she ate 2pouches of wet (160kcal) but also around 30g of dry food ( rc renal and virbac and its about 120kcal) so more than 280kcal and now around 210kcal.

Hi Alena, sorry didn’t see your post sooner. I am very sorry for the CKD and for the higher blood sugar. Our Chico was diagnosed in 2020 in the beginning of the year and we learned due to the forum how to manage it and it helped us a loot.

I am located in Brno, if you want to i can help with anything just let me know. We are feeding raw with felini complete from zoohit. If i’m not wrong it is considered to be low phos but i will check it and confirm it.

where are you from?
