This morning we did not test the BG because last night Chanel couldn't sleep and was breathing fast. A few hours later, her breathing became shallow and so fast, she was crying and we rushed her to ER, thinking it is because of the struvite crystals in her urine.
At 1 am she was diagnosed with asthma attack, the doctor gave her albuterol (inhaler) and some dexamethasone (she assured us that it will not affect the diabetes too much since it was just one dose designed to help her at that particular moment). She also received oxygen therapy.
She wanted to keep Chanel until 8 am but we preferred to take her home as soon as the doctor would be comfortable to release her.
When we came home, just did the insulin shot and fed her. Pricking her ear with my tired eyes was not safe.
She is still breathing fast, purring to herself, but not fighting to breath.
Although this morning when we came home, she was still breathing fast and shallow, but the doctor said before rushing her back to ER, we might have a highly stress furbaby on our hands and to give her a little time to relax. It took her like two hours to stop making noises while breathing, then finally we got a couple of hours of sleep.

She is a little better, her doctor will get two inhalers for her: one albuterol for attacks and one steroid-based for cases when the allergy goes for days. She assured me that the steroid-based one because it is an inhaler, it will not impact Chanel's diabetes too much.
Other than that, she is hiding every time I talk on the phone, she made a connection between her being sick, me calling, and finally ending up at the vet.
Thank God she is a chubby one and cannot hide in places I cannot reach her (under the bed etc.).
She ate, I am giving her Catwater with a syringe and hoping we will have a better night tonight.
 
I am glad she’s doing better. They are so smart. All I have to do is change my routine and my two are suspicious. I had to buy risers for my bed when my first one got sick so I could crawl under the bed. My current two are young and too fast so if I need to catch one and miss on the first try I have to call for help.

We do have others with asthma here and the inhalers don’t seem to have an impact on their bg. I hope that you won’t need to use it much.

FWIW, I have asthma and I've always been told that the steroid inhaler doesn't raise your BG, it is the ingested ones like pred. that can cause it.

I knooow! That vet from Canada was sooo right when she said: 'you need to get used to being the idiot in the room'. She knows things and usually she seems she does not care much, but when I was worried sick about my dad having only 30% respiratory function because of Covid, Chanel came to sleep next to me and lick my face and my hands at night to comfort me, same during day if she saw me crying. Then, one day she stopped doing that and I knew my dad got better....my mom called later to confirm LOL.
I have both the inhalers...albuterol for emergencies and fluticasone if the asthma persists for days. We ordered the Aerokat mask.
Now she is under the dinner table and snoring quietly.
Tomorrow, cleaning the house. Every week and I may need to do it even more often. We added to the list to have professional help to vacuum our carpets (I lose more hair than 10 cats) and ordered an air purifier.
I am lucky compared to you, Chanel is chubby and has arthritis as well, so she is not fast. Even if she tries to run, she looks like a racoon and she cannot fit under anything being so easy to see (aka fluffy) LOL.
Besides, you have two and they understand each other and keep an eye on you. Not easy to move undetected and I bet they smell your intentions before you even think about it LOL

Yes, she was not happy to go to the vet, but I think she realized we could not help her. She always complains the entire trip so much you get a headache. This morning, she was quiet and keeping her head down because she was so sick and weak she could not raise it.
After the ER, when going back home, she was being a total dog: open mouth and breathing hard, meowing and looking everywhere. A couple of times she wanted to jump off the carrier (I keep it open in my lap) and got her little face close to the window, very curious about everything (and oh man, it was almost no one at 4 am but she seems to enjoy the night time).
I already started giving her the vitamin C to acidify the urine. It may take a while to work, but for now it looks like her urine pH is around 6.5
The vet wants it under 6, but no lower than 5, I think.

She is a total babe, now every 5-10 minutes we stop doing what we are doing and try to listen to her breathing. I tried to get closer and she woke up annoyed. She does not like me invading her personal space LOL

It drives me walnuts thinking how much medication she accumulates. On the other hand, she is 16 years old and that I think it is like 80 in human years. I should shut up because I heard about kids and adults having asthma and dealing with dignity about it. I am the headless chicken, but only because Chanel is a cat and not a human...although at times I think she considers herself very human and makes a grumpy face to go with it.
Thank you for the vibes, she definitely needs them. I know the moment she goes back to her old BGs and the crystals start dissolving, she will feel better. As for the asthma, yeah, my husband has the hay fever also. They always manage to get sick in the same time, you would think they are twins :p:p:p
