Fred-dental update

Just an update on Fred. It's been a long 24 hours, but I will be going to pick up my boy in a couple of hours.

I ended up giving him a little more than half his dose last night, as he was a bit too low for my taste at PMPS. Being fasted, he actually did OK (flat) with that amount, until...

I dropped him at 8 AM and was told he'd be taken in at around 10:30 AM. When 1 PM rolled around and I hadn't heard anything, I started to freak out. I called the vet, and was twice put on a very long hold while they "called into the back". It was so long that I was convinced he was dead, and they were trying to figure out how to tell me. As it turns out, he was still in surgery. I received the update that he was doing really well but had "a mouth full of FORLS", and his sugar had climbed into the mid 600's! He was starting to come back down, but thanks to me being pretty aggressive in telling them he could plunge, they didn't give him R. She said if he hadn't started to go down right when he did, she was going to do so.

As for his poor teeth, both lower canines were removed, as well as 4 others. My vet said he had "huge lesions" that were only visible on x-ray, save for the one we could see on his left canine. The poor guy must have been in so much pain. Ultimately, it was a pretty long and extensive procedure-about 3 hours. He now has very few teeth left- he's a Bumble. :(. But the important thing now is that hopefully, he will have a much happier mouth.

I know it's going to be quite the recovery. We'll be sent home with bupe and Veraflox (ABX). I know plenty of cats have had all their teeth removed and been just fine, but I do worry. I've heard that without the canines, his tongue could stick out? And I hope removing the canines doesn't compromise his jaw. In the past, after extractions, he's gone right back to eating. But he was a younger fellow then, and not diabetic. I DO hope he eats...I'll be worried about dosing if he does not.

Thank you again for all your thoughts and well wishes!! Freddy thanks you as well!

Poor Fred (and poor you!), what an ordeal... so glad he came through with flying colors, and free of all his painful teeth. My cat Mew got both upper canines extracted for nasty FORLs a couple of years ago (as well as many other teeth over the years), and she was eating like a champ upon coming home. The relief from pain is to be seen to be believed! Her tongue doesn't stick out, but sometimes her remaining lower canine gives her a snaggletooth look that is both hilarious and adorable. Gets her many, many treats.

I am also a natural worrier so I can absolutely relate... hope he devours his first meal to relieve your anxiety a bit :bighug:

Fred is going to feel SO much better after this. :bighug: I hope his pain is managed and he feels like eating a little tonight. If you haven't already, I'd pick up some all meat baby food that will be easy for him to slurp up tonight.

You must have been a nervous wreck, I would have felt the same way.
I hope Fred starts to feel better soon and has eaten for you , poor baby.
Please keep us updated on how he's doing :bighug::cat:

You must have been a nervous wreck
OMG...I absolutely was. I just felt something HAD to be wrong.

maybe it will help to read about how well he is doing?
It DID! Thank you so much. @Jodey&Eddie&Blue I hope Blue is doing well!

I hope his pain is managed and he feels like eating a little tonight.
They gave him bupe just before I picked up him at 6 PM. Fred goes craaaazy on bupe. Loves everyone, rubs everything, rolls on his back, hugely dilated eyes, etc. So that was taken care of for last night. And he ate like a champ last night! In fact, he spent half the night lifting his plate and banging it back down when he felt he was not getting enough food. He's a little unsure as to where to put his tongue when eating and looks a bit like an infant with food smeared on his face. :) But I think he'll get there.

He's due for another dose of bupe just about now, but I'm a little hesitant, as I can still see he's affected by last night's dose. I don't want to overdo it. Yet I also don't want him to be in pain. He's more subdued and a little weird this AM-like bupe weird.

All in all, we've a recovery to get through, but I so thank you for all your support for this "old timer" member. :bighug::bighug:

Also, I don't know if you saw his story, but Blue just went through this - maybe it will help to read about how well he is doing?

I hope Fred is on the mend. I had a similar experience about the phone call and when I called them I was told, "he's out of surgery and is recovering comfortably"!!! I was so relieved I felt my legs go a bit weak and realized how much tension I was holding up until the good news.

Unlike Fred, Blue had all his remaining teeth removed (for about the same reasons: lesions, cracked canine, the whole bag). I say "remaining" teeth because already had dental surgery years back but this time was linked to all his complications: acromegaly, DM, etc.

But really, I hope Fred's :bighug::cat: recovery is as smooth and speedy as Blue's. He's eating, drinking, kittyboxing all in a good way. :cat:

What dose of bupe are you giving? Dosing really does depend on cat, and on weight. I had two similar size cats where the same dose did not work with both. Neko needed, and could handle more than the civvie. You might want to try lowering the dose a bit. It's also better to stay ahead of pain by giving bupe until his mouth heals.

How's Fed feeling today, I hope he's eating better :cat: I was reading your notes in the remarks section and saw you used the word agita, Do you happen to be Italian , I only ask because I'm Italian and I always say agita :p It seems like only Italians will say agita :bighug::cat:
I'm also from N.J.

I am so glad to read Fred came through the dental, it is so scary trusting our furbabies to get the anesthesia, I know. Sending additional healing vibes, and Wendy beat me to the punch, having baby food on hand was very useful. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
