Just an update on Fred. It's been a long 24 hours, but I will be going to pick up my boy in a couple of hours.
I ended up giving him a little more than half his dose last night, as he was a bit too low for my taste at PMPS. Being fasted, he actually did OK (flat) with that amount, until...
I dropped him at 8 AM and was told he'd be taken in at around 10:30 AM. When 1 PM rolled around and I hadn't heard anything, I started to freak out. I called the vet, and was twice put on a very long hold while they "called into the back". It was so long that I was convinced he was dead, and they were trying to figure out how to tell me. As it turns out, he was still in surgery. I received the update that he was doing really well but had "a mouth full of FORLS", and his sugar had climbed into the mid 600's! He was starting to come back down, but thanks to me being pretty aggressive in telling them he could plunge, they didn't give him R. She said if he hadn't started to go down right when he did, she was going to do so.
As for his poor teeth, both lower canines were removed, as well as 4 others. My vet said he had "huge lesions" that were only visible on x-ray, save for the one we could see on his left canine. The poor guy must have been in so much pain. Ultimately, it was a pretty long and extensive procedure-about 3 hours. He now has very few teeth left- he's a Bumble.
. But the important thing now is that hopefully, he will have a much happier mouth.
I know it's going to be quite the recovery. We'll be sent home with bupe and Veraflox (ABX). I know plenty of cats have had all their teeth removed and been just fine, but I do worry. I've heard that without the canines, his tongue could stick out? And I hope removing the canines doesn't compromise his jaw. In the past, after extractions, he's gone right back to eating. But he was a younger fellow then, and not diabetic. I DO hope he eats...I'll be worried about dosing if he does not.
Thank you again for all your thoughts and well wishes!! Freddy thanks you as well!
