Roxy - Help - overdosed

Hi guys I need some help - I think I have just massively overdosed Roxy by accident. Lack of sleep, wasn't concentrating and just pulled the insulin and forgot to squeeze out the excess. What do I do? Her number was only 7.5 too. Can I stop her crashing by high carb food and if so how much and when do I start? So scared..

First, call the vet and let them know what happened. You want to know if they will be available if you need to take her in.

What is your supply of test strips like? High carb food supply? Is she eating well, and what have you fed her so far?

What dose do you think you gave instead of 1.0 units?

How much do you think you gave? Did you draw up to 1.5 or more? You will need to closely monitor this cycle to see what the extra insulin may or may not do, starting with a +1, +2 and go from there. What do you have for high carb food in terms of % and do you have syrup or honey in hand?

Incidentally, there are not a lot of mid cycle tests only preshots, and following TR you really need to get in the habit of midcycle tests both am and pm cycles. Preshots don't give you the whole picture, since we dose based on how low the dose is taking the kitty. The jump up from 0.5u on1u was also too much, especially given the lack of testing.

I think it was around 3 or 4 or maybe even 5 units. :( I have medium (florentine) and a little high carb food, couple cans of gravy lovers.
Her numbers are not up to date in the sheet, we were on holiday and she had a BG monitor fitted for 2 weeks and I haven't input all the numbers yet or since, been so busy this week :(

If you think it is that much extra insulin, take her to the vet now. It may be difficult to manage on your own, and she will likely need a dextrose drip at the vet's office. Overdoses can run well past usual time frame of typical insulin duration, so you may likely need constant, frequent testing for 12+ hours and intervention with HC food or syrup to make sure she is safe.

Agree with Christie, that is more extra insulin than you can easily handle at home. A vet is the safest answer. A Lantus overdose can last 16 hours or more. You don't want to be fighting low numbers for that long.

On the spreadsheet, use the Remarks or a blank line to show that the 0.5 unit dosing was a vacation dose.

Thanks everyone so much! It’s been a long stressful day but I’m happy to report Roxy was monitored at the hospital all day and she went really well. I dosed her with some high carb gravy first then took her in at 9:30. She didn’t drop below 5.2 at 11am then started rising again! We picked her hop at 5:30. Vet advised no insulin this evening then returning to regular dose on the morning. Very grateful. ❤️

So glad!!!!!

Great news! Glad to hear she's OK and you could get her into the vet so promptly.

I've removed the 911 since the situation is now OK.
