Missed a dose- what to do?

I gave Toby his insulin at 8:30 this morning but it somehow went into his fur. I didn't give him another dose just in case some of it went in. Now at 12:30 his glucose is very high. Typically it would be much lower at this time That means he didn't get any of his insulin. Should I give him a dose now and then later tonight? How important is it to be exactly 12 hours apart with dosing all the time - can there by excptions? Toby just spend two days getting fluids at the vet clinic due to dehydration and low potassium so I'm concerned about his high glucose right now and keeping him hydrated.

No you can't shoot again until his PM shot.
There's nothing you can do now Ann, you will have to wait it out and just give him his next scheduled dose i'm afraid.

No you never reshoot even if it's a fur shot. Just because he's high that doesn't mean he didn't get any insulin. You only shoot every 12hrs. What insulin are you using & what dose?
 
I'm giving him Lantus (Glargine) and just started 2.5 units twice a day.( Do I multiply that by 18 for international units?) He has had low potassium a few times now and ended up in hospital. They still don't know why after many tests. I get it that we need to be consistent with dosing in order to get stabilized. I was wondering if it was ok once in awhile but I guess not. I dont know why I sometimes can't tell if the needle is in his skin with all that fur to get through. Any tips?

Hi Ann
The 2.5 units is correct, there's no conversion on the u100 syringe.
The multiply by 18 you mention is the meter reading conversion from international Blood glucose readings to US Blood Glucose readings.

I will tag a couple of more experienced members for you. They can help you get a spreadsheet setup & start helping you with dosing. I myself just put the needle in my kitty & shoot. Alot of people do tent though but I don't have the experience they have, I just know that fur shots happen I've given my boy fur shots many time's & sometimes he would have high #s & sometimes he would drop to lower #s. You just never know how much they got & you don't want to overdose them. @Diane Tyler's Mom @tiffmaxee @Wendy&Neko
 
@Bandit's Mom can set you up with a spreadsheet when she comes on later. She’s in India so might not be up and around for a few hours.

Looks like kind of a high dose after just two and a half weeks. We really do need to see a spreadsheet. The others are correct. Never shoot a second time if there’s a fur shot. Some just might have gotten in so there’s risk of an overdose. Don’t worry about it.
 
Thanks for your help. I've connected with Wendy and Neko and will get going on the spreadsheet. Toby has very high glucose and is losing alot of weight. The internist suggested going up to the 2.5 as Toby's lowest number was at 17 on the 2 units.
For the last few days on the 2.5 dose, his lowest number was at 13.
 
Shooting When you pull up on the scruff between the shoulder blades , I pull up the scruff pretty gigh you will feel an indentation with your finger that's where to shoot
