Blue Eddie’s brother UPDATE JULY 30

Lm is about 17lbs. Ok eddie is a big guy. Blue can probably go less. Does eddie need to lose? You could always go 5 oz for the 24 hours to help Eddie's weight

Yes, Eddie needs to lose some of the chonk he has gained over the past few years with acromegaly. I read on the foodfurlife website about feeding to the weight they ought to be rather than the big chonk but acrocats put on muscle so he's gone a bit sumo rather than ninja.

Foodfurlife is such a great website...Thinking Max, the Chi-Corgi mix might enjoy this switch too.

I hope so too! Lm is in love with it but my civvie womt touch it. She will eat it cooked but I havent gotten to a point where I'm making it two different ways. To be honest not sure I ever will. It's way more work to cook it.

just wanted to chime in here as we have six cats (Hendrick and 5 civvies) and the oldest of the 5 civvies just recently showed some signs of kidney function decline. We have the same challenge of finding good low-carb and low-phos options so I just started making food with EZ-Complete myself about a week or so ago

so far I've done only cooked meat, and I've made batches with chicken breast that I boiled, then I tried baking some, and then I made batches with both cooked ground turkey and cooked whole turkey breast.

I bought a food processor (we didn't have one, somehow) for this purpose and I'll use it to chop up the meat a bit then I scoop about a 3rd out while it is still has some chunks, take the remaining 2/3 and chop is up a lot more into much smaller bits, adding water as well. Then I scoop that out into a bowl and mix with the EZ-complete with more water.

with the ground turkey, I thought well this is already ground up I don't need to put it through the food processor. Nope, they didn't like it as much!

So far, every batch I've made has been a rousing success and every cat has eaten it very very well!! Feels good.

The whole thing is MUCH MUCH easier than I ever imagined. I always thought OH MY making your own food what a hassle that must be!! so much work!! Nope, not really not even for six cats. Although I'm sure if I wasn't using EZ-Complete it would be.

This is great to hear!! I guess a food processor is in our future, too. I live with 4 cats, Blue and Eddie (the ones who make appearances here) and Stevie (Nicks), the Norwegian Forest Cat (9 years old, tallll ears) and Ollie, the Flamepoint Siamese (3 years old) and, one sweet dog (who takes orders from the cats), Max, (8) a Chi-Corgi mix.

I'm going to hearing from the vet soon about Blue and will probably bring him home today. I'm not sure what I'll do about the food today especially because we'll have to transition. I also need a scale, I believe. I mean I can't eyeball ounces of food!

With the 1 ounce cube trays no weighing LOL. I do weigh the meat before I mix so I know how much food fur life powder to add though ;)

Absolutley I buy meat make and freeze all the time. Was just giving you option if you buy meat you cant process right away you can freeze first.

I use 1 ounce silicone ice trays that came with lids to portion into 1 oz pieces. I take out 6 per 24 hours for LM size. I'm unsure how big your Eddie or Blue are so may need less but definitely not more.

Make sure to do a small batch to start of different proteins. Maybe half a pound of whatever you find. Food fur life has great tips for introducing food.
And @Wendy&Neko Do you (plural) use a food processor or a food chopper?
Also, when you take out 6/24 hours how many meals are you talking about? And how many of the 1oz portions do you give per meal?

This just in:

Emergency vet calls with instructions from IM vet (with whom she's been in touch):

He has rec'd insulin 1u but the IM vet wants him to go to 2u starting tonight as his BG this morning was 360 (after rec'ving 1u last night and 1u this morning).

Furthermore, the IM Vet wants him to stay on the renal diet even as it is antagonist to BG. He says it's more important to cater to the kidneys than to the BG. He emphasizes the Hills renal diet as being the solution to "comorbidities". They say he's not going to go into remission.

I'm going to give him the renal diet, which he's been on for two weeks, and sloooooooowly introduce the raw with EZComplete.

Does this sound like a plan???

I didn't use a food processor or grinder. I can get ground meat either at my local raw pet food store or organic exotic meat butcher.

They say he's not going to go into remission.
Definitely unlikely on that kidney diet. There have been lots of people here cater to their cats kidneys with off the shelf commercial low carb low phosphorus food, or raw. It's your call how much you want to follow the IM vet's suggestions. I can't remember, did you ever post Blue's blood work? I can't remember it being that bad.

I have no intention of keeping Blue on the "special" food. I'm going to go the distance and transition with the EZComplete and raw...I found a store that has ground chicken, etc. and once I've got Blue settled (he's coming home today), I will be going the tablespoon route. I also have some Weruva Press Your Lunch, which is
Protein 44% (of cals)
Fat 50% (of cals)
Carbs 6% (of cals)
Phosphorus mg/100kcal 180
Phosphorus DMB 0.84%
Calcium DMB 0.77%
Sodium DMB 0.35%
Protein DMB 59%
ME kcals/kg 665

How does that look? I noticed the other day it has potato starch and if I'm not mistaken you mentions those carbs are much, much better than the "special" diet.

Well, glad I don't have to buy a processor at the moment. But those little silicone cups with lids will be great for measurement.

I use a small grinder attachment that I have for my mixer.

So he gets1 oz per AMPS, PMPS and nearly an ounce and the mid day snack. Then just tsp snacks at the +1 and +2 times. So it's about 6 oz probably just a little less

I'm really interested in feeding raw and have some questions, but I do not want to hijack Jodey&Eddie's thread. Is there a pinned thread for learning more about it? (I looked but might be missing it.)

Now I remember the blood work, his kidney numbers are still in range and he's stage 2. Way too early for kidney diet. His phosphorus is in range, but a bit high, going to a lower P diet would be a good first step. Next blood work for him, get them to send it to the labs instead of in house. Would be nice to get the SDMA from Idexx.

Has Blue had a recent blood pressure test done?

See my answer in post 31 regarding the food, plus it's listed in the table I linked in post 26.

@Ben&Squirrel Not a pinned post, but a discussion in Think Tank is a place to start:
Raw Feeding Senior Kitties

I've gone all over town. It's summer here in a lake city so good luck trying to find silicon trays. The one I did find has compartments measuring 2"x2"x4 1/4" and have fill lines of 1/2 cup and 1 cup. My question is: I read that one (1) cup of raw meat weighs 5.3 ounces, meaning that one compartment is not quite 6 ounces so I could use part of the second (if I'm using the same as LM).

Am I right here? The EZComplete package says to make one meal to add 1 scoop to 1.5 ounces of boneless meat.
But the compartments look so small to hold a meal. Oh, boy...

Just got this email from the IM Vet (I told him I'm not wanting to continue with the Hills diet):

BLUE:
Renal values have improved, that is positive. I have not seen labwork, renal diet to be continued for his kidneys. In deciding what diet is best for Blue there are some conflicting requirements, ideally complex carbohydrates for DM but low protein for kidneys. There is no such diet to the best of my knowledge so pick one that is most urgent. In my opinion at this time, kidneys need renal diet, higher content carbohydrates is the result but DM regulation not yet out of control.

One option is to pay for a nutritional consult with a veterinary nutritionist to get their opinion what would be optimal for Blue. What I like about the renal diet is that he eats it (despite his dental problems) and that renal values are stabilizing.

I expect that Blue will need insulin again because of the DM return. We will need to see if his insulin requirements will be high, in that case it raises the suspicion of GH interference with insulin function.

I dont ever make just one serving at a time. I make like 1 to 2 lbs at a time. So I'm measuring in qtr and half cups. I know the 6 oz serving seems small but it really isnt. You got to figure it's mostly protein so no real fillers to worry with

Thank you! Once we get established I'll be making more than one serving, that's for sure. In the meantime, I'll be transitioning Blue from "special" vet food and Eddie from Tiki Cat Mousse (Chicken and Egg). Guess it will take a little time.

Does anyone use the Ezee Egg Yolk?

There's a reason we suggest to people that they keep their cat on low carb food after they go into remission. I think it's worth an experiment with lower carb food to see what impact that has on insulin needs. How long has Blue been OTJ now?

He's been OTJ for two years and he's been eating low carb food all that time. Wet food only. No kibble (or course more recently his dental situation would preclude kibble).

Did the vet do a blood pressure check?
It’s a good idea to monitor that in cats with renal issues as hypertension can occur secondary to CKD.

I do not know. I also did not know to have asked for that. For the most part, I'm finding I'm swimming upstream at times with the IM vet who seems to ventriloquize the emerg vets as they often defer to him.

You could call the clinic and see if they ran a BP, or check your bill for it. It's something the IM vet should have done by now too, so you can call that clinic and see if it's on record.

No

It looks like no one has thought to take his BP. I think I should go out for a walk. Blue is home and he did eat, so that's great. But he's limping from where the IV was (leg swollen) and now he's hiding, which is something he has never done. Ever.
I'm thinking I should have a spread sheet for him???
