Henry's been holding his own the last couple days. Acting a bit better. I'm still concerned about his weight. Picking up some "novel proteins" for him today. Had a non-symptomatic hypo incident(s) last night. Even if the numbers on the libre are off, it's still worth its weight in gold for catching a hypo. Hope to hear back from vet today.

Does Henry like raw or boiled/ grilled chicken ? May be worth adding a little bit of more protein sometimes some foods have a ton of fat and much less protein. Like Wellness pates and even some weruva foods (the truluxe variety has more protein and less fat). Just something to consider when feeding to look at the protein vs fat and phosphorus percentage in addition to carbs. But I am not an expert just giving my two cents :) Hope Henry will love those new foods and will put on extra weight. I wish my Henry could donate some of his extra pounds because he could really benefit from less... let's call it fluffiness .. haha

I've never tried giving him raw chicken. He definitely likes cooked chicken but not as much as his beloved pates.

Supposedly these new "single source" novel proteins I got are high in protein, but I think he really needs the fat too. I'll look into the weruva, I've seen that name come up a few times on my searches. I need to find more MC and HC. If he does have IBD tho, I worry about re-irritating his GI with chicken or turkey or beef after he's been on these novel proteins for awhile. I think I saw weruva had some novel ones tho.

lol, yeah I've thought about that a few times. If only kitties could donate their "fluffiness" to their less fluffy fellow felines.

I've done a ton of reading about the confusing world of cat food/nutrition values today. I think with all the DKAs phosphorous deficiency may be a problem, so maybe he needs more? not really sure.

Hope Henry will love those new foods and will put on extra weight.
He used to have a little paunch that would hang down but now his former undercarriage is tight to his body.

Hi John, how are things going ?
Did you get a test for +1 after the R?
Going alright. He's loving the new food and it's much more calorie dense. I've been trying to keep an eye on him without so many pokes using the libre. It's currently reading 400 but it's usually less (somewhere in the 300s) I'll poke him at +2 and +6. Maybe +4 too if +2 looks weird. His fur is snapping back way better than I've seen in a long time. Hopefully that means he's well hydrated. I swear those subQ fluids are the best thing for him. It perks him up a couple hours later every time.

I am glad Henry is doing well. Sub Q fluids make a big difference and it does sound as if he is well hydrated.
Is the new food the higher low carb food that Sandy mentioned?

It ranges from 3-6% Been looking all night for some higher stuff that is novel to him. Found one that is like 16% I'll get tomorrow if it's in stock. One of the appeals of this premium food is its not just padded with cheap carbs so there isn't a ton of MC HC atleast available locally. I've been trudging through chewy hoping to find some more.

I would not be concerned about lack of phosphorus in his diet unless current bloodwork shows that his blood phosphorus levels are low. Many of us have the opposite problem of trying to find a food that is low in phosphorus since phosphorus is processed through the kidneys and we are trying to reduce the load on our cats aging kidneys. I am sure the Ziwi Peak foods contain adequate phosphorus levels.

Catinfo.org by Dr. Lisa Pierson contains great information on what to feed your cat (and lots of other info too.) A couple of other good places for you to visit would be ibdkitties.net and rawfeedingforibdcats.org.

Cool I'll check it out. I've been reading the IBD one you listed. Tons of info there. With the DKA they're always trying to get more phosphorus and potassium into him (I think that's what it is anyway.)

+2 is 244 so higher than I'd like. I should have went with the .25uR but it was just on the boarder so I thought I'd be conservative. Seems like the .1uR shot has been almost useless every time I've done it. Any way I'll be back for a +6 & hope the ketones stay under 1.1

But I don’t think they would have sent him home until his electrolytes were balanced and holding steady. If his potassium was still low, they would have sent you home with some supplementary potassium to give him.

How are the sub-q fluids sessions going?

So she had said that with all the ketone production and the fact his blood acidifies so quickly that part of the reason for the subQ fluids were so that he could get potassium and also that the fluids may be able to help keep the blood pH balanced if they got off without needing to bring him to the hospital.

SubQ fluids administration is going good. The 19g butterfly needles the vet gave work way better than the "kitty harpoons". He hasn't protested, tried to escape or even flinched the last 2 or 3 days when giving the fluids. Also that video gave me some good pointers. Haven't shot through again either.

Sandy mentioned getting some higher low carb 5-9% and feeding that so we can keep the 1.75 Lantus dose. I
One of the ones I got was 6% so I can get some more of those. Chewy has so much to choose from hopefully I'll be able to find others in that range.

Hi there

Any ketone check so far today?

I really like seeing the ketone readings in the AMPS and PMPS cells. I think it’s an important consideration that can help you decide on how much, if any, R to shoot.

Is it lactated ringers solution? Lactated Ringers solution contains sodium lactate. The body metabolizes this sodium lactate to bicarbonate. This is a "base" that can help make the body less acidic.

Yeah, that's true. Didn't think about that. I guess I figured I knew there was going to be ketones (if history is any guide they're probably about 1.1 right now). AMPS happens in 30 minutes, I will check them. They're doing utility work near my house today and the power will be off for up to 4 more hours so I won't be able to enter anything into the SS til then (sheets on my phone is always in view only mode), but I'll post the results here.

So Ketones are .6 at AMPS and BG is 326. Normally I would say he needs some R, but I think we're probably going to see a downward trend this cycle if history is any kind of guide. Think some R would be in order? maybe just .1uR?

It says "multi electrolyte solution" on the bag. It goes on to talk something about pH on the bag too, but I can't see what it says because its covered by the Rx label.
