Switched from Caninsulin to Lantus today...is he dropping too fast now?

We switched from 3 units canninsulin to Lantus today - started with low 1 dose this morning....he was HI all day so vet and I agreed to up to 2 units (which we were also considering starting him on for the am) for pm - he has a Freestyle Libre on an I am to monitor him very closely (I check multiple times an hour) and I am worried his numbers are dropping too quickly. Thoughts?
I posted on the main thread today too but this is a more specific/urgent question.
Thanks

Hi. I just came home again. Let me check. Sometimes cats have a big response to the first shot. I will be right back.

That’s not a big drop but he didn’t get a food bump. Feed him a little food now and check in an hour. Remember normal bg for a cat is 50-100.
Thank you so much for your replies. I honestly cannot thank you enough. I will continue to update his sheet and monitor closely. Hoping his Libre doesn't come off!

Currently +1 was 344, is that correct? It looks like world show the same though. Are you entering the data on the world? That’s where you enter the world number.

Now stick with 2.0for a week and let the depot build, unless there’s a drop under 90. If that happens you would reduce.

+1 was 475 +2 was 344 ….currently 173 at +3.75 ……I’m so nervous about hypo and don’t know how quickly to expect numbers to fall and when to expect them to level off….new to Lantus….

We need to see how he responds to lantus. It will be quite different from your previous insulin. He’s doing fine right now. You could wait to test until +5.

Thanks. He’s 160 now. I’ll wait and test again at +5 … I need a drink I think!

Feed a few teaspoons of lc. He should be close to nadir. Check in 30 minutes. What percent carbs do you have?

Are the results from ear pricks or the Libre? The Libre sometimes reads lower. If the next test is any lower double check with an ear prick. Looks like tomorrow you will reduce to 1.75.

Thanks just got 4.3mmol 77.4 on Libre and checked with ear prick and its 4.8mmol 86.4. He’s on fancy feast classic pate and purina pro plan diabetic wet.

If no dry you can do TR. Reductions are if under 50. With SLGS reductions are under 90.

He is not on dry anymore but I just gave him a few royal canin diabetic kibble because numbers were low and making me nervous. He is hovering around 4.7mmol 84.6 now. Hoping he doesn’t go lower. I don’t understand how in the first 12 hours today he never got out of the hi zone and now this. Such huge change. So much to learn.

There’s a steep learning curve. Lantus is based upon how low it takes your cat. That for many cats is between +5.7. Sone nadir early and sone later. It will take time to see his he reacts and nadir timing can change. I think he’s flattening out now. You want to save hc and dry for under 50 if you follow TR. If you choose SLGS he’s earned a reduction. Better to feed hc wet or add a few drops of syrup to wet than to feed kibble because it takes a lot longer for kibble to stop effecting his BG.

I can’t thank you enough for your support tonight. Truly. He’s at 6.8 mmol 122.4 now….I did rub a little syrup on his gums in my panic. Hope I didn’t overdo it. I will give him a reduction tomorrow. Would going to 1.5 units be safer or should I go to 1.75 with a .35 reduction. I’ll be curious if he goes high again tomorrow poor guy is always in an extreme range.

When a cat gets into lower BG than used to they often bounce going high. The more time in normal BG the less many cats bounce. Tags why you see extremes. Bounces can take 4-6 cycles to clear or clear quickly.

Thanks that makes sense really hoping I become less panicked once I have some data I can refer back to

I guarantee you will be less panicked and btw green soon becomes contagious. The data makes all the difference. Just keep posting and asking questions.

My stomach did always drop if I saw a number in the 30’s so I can’t guarantee that won’t happen.

Thanks I meant to do that but wasn’t sure how I’ll figure it out for next time
You're welcome
If you are going to post for today on the lantus forum you would do it like this
Date Herman AMPS# and any tests after that, you can add PMPS to it also
To add additional tests look to the right of your title you will see Thread Tools click on that then click on Edit title add the tests and tap Save

To add this post to today's 6-30 look up top above that pic of the cat on the left hand side your previous post will be above that in that long line copy and paste it to today's

We do a new post every day and link the previous days thread to it

@Amy & Herman

Edit I see you are following SLGS on your spreadsheet can you add that to your signature also
Tap on your name up top, tap signature and add SLGS and tap save :cat:

My libre always reads higher.. Sometimes way higher. Almost anytime the ear prick read over 300, the Libre reports 400 or HI. The numbers are closer when the BG is lower, but the libre is always the higher of the two.
Many here have had very low readings at times here but not under 50 with an ear prick. I’m just going by people on the board. They do read closer when on the lower end.
