Hi,

My cat Simba was used to drink a small amount of milk from time to time before he was
diagnosed with diabetes.
Since then i didn't give him milk anymore.
He's not getting insulin for almost 2 months.

I saw lactose free milk at the store, and i wonder, is it safe to give a few times a week?

Thank you.

I'm not sure but I don't think so since the problem with diabetes isn't necesarily the lactose ( which could actually be a problem for many cats not only diabetic) but the sugar ( glucose ) that the milk naturally contains

I thought that the lactose is the sugar in the milk.

Actually it is but thing is when lactose free milk is made they do not actually remove the lactose, what they do is process it so that the lactose is decomposed into it's more digestible components one of which is actually glucose, so that lactose intolerant people won't have trouble digesting it, but the glucose is still present in the milk it is not removed, if you have ever tasted lactose free milk it actually tends to tase somewhat sweet

I thought all cats were lactose intolerant. We sneak Daniel's meds into lactose free yogurt only because it's the only way to get it in him. His real name is Dairy Daniel, when he hears the snap of the cream cheese lid he magically appears at my feet.

Well it appears most of them are but some some may tolerate it better than others and I think most like dairy even if it upsets their tummys but I guess a bit may not harm much ;)

Daniel tolerates almost everything but then again he's not the smartest cat I've ever had. The cheese is one thing, squirting out the door and running across the road is another. He eats bugs too  :blackeye:
