My sister's cat Libby has an enlarged thyroid. The vet has recommended having a thyroid scintigraphy and possible removal of the thyroid. They do not feel the iodine treatment would work for her

She is on a waiting list for an appointment with the University of Florida Small Animal Vetinary clinic. I was wondering if any members may know of any other vets in Florida or Georgia that offer thyroid scintigraphy? I tried searching online and was not able to find anything.

I have read online that this procedure is generally offered at university veterinary hospitals. In GA I believe the UGA university offers this but not fully sure (nuclear scintigraphy is listed) : https://vet.uga.edu/hospital-and-primary-care/hospital/our-services/support-services/
Maybe they can get the cat in faster than in Florida may worth a call.
I would also call Blue Pearl (they have locations in both Florida and Georgia) and they are usually pretty advanced but not sure about this particular procedure. May worth a call (not all locations offer all services). Here is the one in GA that is the largest 24/7 hospital and offers advanced imaging (again not sure about that one as they don't list everything on their site). Sorry i cannot be more helpful. Hopefully someone more experienced on this forum will be able to offer more help.

Good Morning, I'm sorry but I'm not aware of any vet that offers this service. When Luci was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism the vet recommended radioactive ablation of the thyroid...which I followed through with. It was called I-131 and she's feeling much better these days. I hope you find (or possibly have found) out by now the best course of treatment for that enlarged thyroid.

She had a 2nd opinion with another vet and they felt that the thyroid doesn't need to be removed. She had the iodine treatment last week. Keeping our fingers crossed that is all that is needed.

Update... Libby had her right thyroid removed a couple weeks ago. The surgeon said it was the largest one he has ever seen. They sent it off and the results were that it was cancer. However it looked like the cancer was only in the thyroid and had not spread.

Yesterday she had a follow-up with a specialist and oncologist. They said the other thyroid is working and the levels are almost back to normal. Also the oncologist said there is no signs the cancer had spread. She goes back in a month to have everything rechecked. :D
