Hello. I apologize for the delay in posting.
Tommy is getting his shots 2x a day 1/2 unit, no ketones in urine.
He is not eating much and is very thin. He's not feeling well at all from the tooth pain and UTI.
We have to wait for urine test and antibiotic for UTI until Covenia is out of his system vet says.
I am praying he will be OK
I would go back to the vet.
It really important thatTommy starts eating more.
I would ask for something to help him eat more. Ask for some ondansetron which is an antinausea medication. And maybe an appetite stimulant but make sure you give the ondansetron first before the appetite stimulant.
You could also ask the vet about some Hills a/d which is a recovery food and has extra calories in it.
Are you offering food often during the day and evening?

Is there a reason why the tooth problem cannot be dealt with or at least him have some pain meds. Eating with a tooth ache is hard.

If you are not happy with your current vet, which I don’t think you are,I would look around d for another vet. I would not leave it as Tommy needs a plan to help him improve.

I will ask about this. Thank you.

Unfortunately he is the only vet that does house calls.

My spreadsheet link is in signature. Hope the link works. I could not test it myself. Thanks

Convenia is not really good for a uti. I’d call the vet back. You need a urinalysis with a culture and sensitivity to find out IF he has a uti and if he dues which antibiotic will cure it.

Lisa, I am concerned that you have had ketones in the urine some days ago…..are you still testing daily for ketones? It’s really important that you do. Also with that bad tooth and a possible UTI and not eating at all well, you have two of the three things for the the recipe for DKA….diabetic ketoacidosis.
So I would really go back to the vet today or if you don’t trust that vet, find another vet today and get an antibiotic for the tooth or get it treated in some way also get the antinausea meds an appetite stimulant I mentioned in post 2 today.
I am very concerned he may start showing more ketones and slip in to DKA which is a very serious illness.
We need him to eat lots more food and add some warm water, I teaspoon to each snack. Let him eat whatever he wants at the moment. Eating food is more important than what it is he eats at the moment.
Also ask about the hills a/ d food I mentioned on post 2

There were no ketones in urine at any time.
I was told we have to wait for another antibiotic until Covenia is done? And so the urine test would be accurate?
Yes I am asking about the things you mentioned. Thank you for your help.
He is drinking a lot of water still. Yes I am giving him whatever he will eat, not LC only.

Please let us know how you get on. We worry.

His urine is dark pink today but no ketones. Tested with Ketostix. Will it be ok to keep waiting for the urine test from vet after Covenia is out of is system?
I hate waiting so long while he is not well but I guess we have to?

You don’t need to wait for the convenia to leave his system. It’s very likely not done anything for a uti. He needs the correct antibiotic. Convenia stays in the system for months I believe. It sounds like he needs help now.

Yes you are right. I spoke to a different vet who said the same. He is getting the urine test tomorrow and antibiotic. Plus he just tested 81 3 hours after shot. Maybe since he's eating small amounts but is eating and drinking.
