NOT HAPPY WITH SHADOW'S NUMBER PAST 2 DAYS

Please advise.

Shadow was doing really well up until yesterday.

He was off his food most of the day which affects his BS.

Today at +8 in the cycle or 3pm UK time he was 10.1.

He wanted food at + 7 as he was 8.8, so I gave him a low carb half a pouch.

So he was fed extra food at + 7 and + 8 in the cycle which is unusual.

He isn't drinking loads of water, in fact hardly any.

I aim to give 0.5 units tonight if he is above 9.

Not happy.
 
If he's not feeling well for any reason that's going to negatively affect the BG level. So you may want to check and see if there's something going on with his teeth, or is he using the litter box a little more often (UTI)?
But don't worry if you have to give him a little bit of insulin to bring his numbers back down! It's not a failure, it's just the nature of this disease.
My Conan was mostly OTJ, but every now and then his numbers would creep up out of the remission zone and he would need a couple of days of tiny doses and would come right back down and would be good for weeks.
Remember the goal here is regulation and a healthy cat. Remission is gravy, as we say. ❤️

What I've noticed past 2 days is, every 12 hours, I test him at 6.30AM or 6. 30PM, he is below 9, so need need for insulin.

Then after 2 hours after eating his low carb food, he starts to go up.

This evening for instant 10.7 after eating just plain boiled chicken!?

I don't get it?

He isn't peeing at all hardly anything, or even drinking for that matter.

I always gave insulin 20 minutes after he's eaten, but as he is always below 9 I don't know what to do?
 
It will help us to help you if you keep your spreadsheet updated. We are very data driven and need to know what's been going on before we can give you any meaningful advice.

Sure wish you could get him onto Lantus or ProZinc instead of that Caninsulin. He looks like a good candidate for remission but with the limits on Caninsulin it'll be a lot harder

I was going to say the same thing! This group got my tuna into remission after switching to prozinc for like a week! I hope they can make the switch

I wish you'd use the spreadsheet from this forum instead of the one from that Facebook group because the one they use was pirated from us and they did something to it that makes it crash a lot on phones/tablets. It also doesn't work the way ours dose by letting you input your UK numbers but it automatically converts them to the US numbers too....but anyway, it's good to see the numbers. (if you'd like, I'd be happy to transcribe your numbers from the one you're using to ours...just send me a private message here or on Facebook)

The problem I'm more concerned with is that he really isn't ready to be off insulin but because you're using Caninsulin, it ties our hands because we don't recommend shooting lower numbers due to Caninsulin being such a harsh, hard-hitting insulin.

We usually want to keep a cat on insulin as long as safely possible. That means dropping from 1U to 0.75 to 0.5 to 0.25 and eventually down to 0.1. That gives the pancreas the longest time to fully heal so you get a strong remission, not necessarily a fast one.

A cat that's ready to try an OTJ trial will have almost exclusively green numbers. There's still so much blue in Shadow's spreadsheet (but again, due to safety, we don't recommend giving Caninsulin at those lower blue numbers). I'm afraid that his numbers are going to start creeping up and he'll end up back on insulin twice a day, every day.

Sure wish you could get some ProZinc. It's approved in the UK for cats as a "first" insulin. (used to be you had to prove Caninsulin wasn't working before you could get ProZinc or Lantus but several years ago they added ProZinc to the approved list)
