Hooray! I am so happy to hear this! I'm sitting here at my computer (with my orange cat Oliver in my lap) and smiling! I really think those sub-q fluids have helped him :)

Tell Oliver I said he has an amazing Mom! :)

Regarding the sub-q fluids, 24 hrs from his last sub-q puts us at his PM shot time. How long after his insulin dose should I wait to do more fluids?

I would not worry too much about the timing of the fluids. If you are able to, why don't you just give the fluids mid-cycle sometime today? You could pick a time that you think will work for you I used to give Darcy fluids shortly after his insulin with no problems at all. If you are concerned, wait an hour or two. I'm thinking that I always give food or treats with fluids. I basically let my cats eat while I am giving the fluids. I stick a bowl of food down in front of them and if they are reluctant to eat it may be pure meat baby food or food with forti-flora sprinkled on top (depends upon the cat). Now, I admit that I usually have help too. My daughter is there to hold the bowl if necessary.

Now, having said all that... my cat was on a long acting insulin and not vetsulin (although we did start off with vetsulin and went through all different insulins before we finally ended up with Levemir.) Given that vetsulin will onset rather quickly, I really think that you will be fine giving the fluids an hour or so after the insulin. It kind of depends on what will work for your schedule. If you want to do them in the evening that's fine, too. Do you have to go out to work?

@Suzanne & Darcy

My husband and I are both self employed and work from home so I am able to work around what Marvin needs. I will see if and when I can get to see the vet and go from there to when I can give them.

Just got off the phone with the vet clinic, they can't get me in today so I have am appointment tomorrow morning at 8am.

That's great. I hope you get a good vet there. I hope and pray that Marvin's kidney values have improved. Why did you have him quarantined off in a separate room? Was it just because he was ill and you wanted him to be in a quiet place?

All the vets that I have seen there in the past have been wonderful, I should have just taken him there in the first place. I had 5 other cats in the house, well 4 now since I just lost one to FIP, who are free fed. They all come in the bedroom to hang out with him when they want to but because I haven't taken the time to get them on a feeding schedule I don't want him to have access to their dry food.

I'm sorry you lost a cat to FIP. There are treatments now for FIP. I lost a cat, Sophie, to FIP but that was about 15 years ago and they didn't have treatment back then. I know of a few people now whose cats have been cured of FIP.

I wish I had known that but glad to hear there have been successful treatments.

I am so happy he is feeling better, much more alert and active today.
Glad to hear it! Just keep food and fluids coming. BG is pretty much perfect at this dose, we'll see how he does. Ketones begone!

Note for any lurkers - all this advice is very strictly for Marvin. We are bending/breaking a lot of the typical Vetsulin dosing rules due to ketones and recent infection (and therefore significant DKA risk). This should only be done with the guidance of experienced members.

As a reminder in an otherwise healthy cat dose reductions happen any time a cat goes below 90, and we do not want to shoot below 200 unless you have a lot of data.

I appreciate you all going above and beyond for my Marvin!! He is definitely a different kitty today so I know he is feeling at least a little better. Ketone blood monitor should be here in a couple of hours. About to start PM dosing.

@FrostD

Just a quick question please. I did his PMPS BG test, fed him and then tested him again just before I shot to make sure his numbers where rising. Should I just record the first BG on his SS or both and how would I record that?

Thank you! :)

I would record the PMPS test in the PMPS column and then you could just add in the remarks column that you fed then waited but took it again just before the insulin and it was xx.

Thank you everyone for all your support today, I will update you all tomorrow after our vet appointment.

Have a wonderful evening!
You too, hope it goes well!

Also - please start a new thread tomorrow with a link to this one, as this one is rather long (we try to cap them at 50 posts, but last night was a pressing situation so we kept it all in one).
