04/18 Eddie Update from the Hospital & He's HOME!!

Good afternoon,
Here's yesterday's story.

https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/04-17-eddie-update-hospitalization.262145/#post-2939113

I just spoke with Eddie's attending nurse. Eddie is recovering in his little kennel and has been eating. Eating!! I almost feel delirious with joy over that fact.

He's had more blood tests to compare with yesterday's and results are forthcoming.

His numbers and insulin doses are a bit odd because the hospital has been speaking with Eddie's IM vet (which bugs me because they are making decisions without me but it's to be expected) and they have all decided that Eddie is on 1u Lantus (based on numbers from last night and today) and they may want to increase them to 3u (already when thinking of increase they think in terms of 2u increments). I've tried to fill in the SS with the information provided to me but it's a bit spotty.

Did I say he's eating! :cat: Every 4 hours!

He may be coming home later today or they may recommend he stay one more night to ensure stability. It was really, really strange last night not to be doing all the things with Eddie. I can't wait for him to be home.

I'm so grateful :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: to everyone here for your kind words and support.

Will update once I've got the information.

That's a mostly good news report. Not unsurprising on the insulin dosing, we hear too often about "creative dosing" from vet hospitals. You can always get him back on track when you get home. Have you heard what food Eddie is eating? Any explanation why he was off his food before?

Got all fingers, toes, tails and paws crossed here for him to return home today. :bighug:

I am so glad to hear he is doing better! Yay for eating!! Sad that vets are so ridiculous with the dosing but as wendy said get back on track once home.

Did I mention yay for eating?!:bighug::bighug:

I'll be having the discussion about said "creative dosing" later with the vet once the new results are in. I do agree with them at this moment giving him his 9u is not a good idea but we'll see.

Eddie is eating his own food. I dropped it off for them when I brought him there. He's not getting the entire menu that I provide but at least what he is eating is familiar to him. I'm guessing he was off his food because of his UTI and all systems went haywire with the CT scan fiasco and the UTI. He hasn't vomited again, so that's something. I must remember to ask them about the diarrhea. I know he was getting Gabapentin yesterday so that's probably helping him to feel more comfortable.

Good to hear he's getting food he's used to, and low carb. You still have the s. boullardi around for diarrhea?

Yeah!! Eddie is coming home.:joyful::joyful:

I read the ongoing thread on dose that got accidentally posted on yesterday's thread. I wouldn't go low on his dose. He was getting greens on 9 units. But also seeing over 300. He's now had 5 cycles at next to no insulin, relative to his normal dose. The depot is now pretty much depleted. Sounded like you didn't want to go higher than 4.5 units. You could try that for a few cycles, though I expect he'll need to go not far off the dose where he was a few days ago.
