Hi everyone,

I will need to be traveling in a couple of months, if we can get Benny's numbers under control. Can anyone share how they have handled traveling? I hate to leave him but may need to. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

I'm a new member so no where near an expert but I had a trip booked 2 weeks after my cat got diagnosed. I was so worried but didn't feel like I could cancel our trip. We left for 13 days. Our vet recommended a Libre, just in case our cat sitter wasn't able to reliably get pokes in. It worked great and stayed on the entire time we were gone and I got to spy on his blood sugars from the beach to ease my mind. Luckily our cat sitter that we had been using for years was comfortable giving insulin and testing blood sugar even though she had never done this for a cat. She came over a couple of days before we left and I showed her everything. Since we were just starting out his sugars were steadily in the yellow with the occasional blue so I could relax about lows with the Libre on him. Our cat sitter stayed at our house which was really nice knowing someone was there through the night.

Do you have a friend that can take care of him including testing? If Benny knows them well and will not hide, you may be able to leave him home and come over. Or if they can, take him to their house.

Another option is to check if any of the techs at your vets office can take care of him. If he is shy with strangers you may want to confine him to one room.

The 3rd option is if possible, take him with you. We have several members that travel with their cat and they will be able to help you prepare for your trip.

That is great news. I think a Libre is my best hope. I'll be getting him one next month to see if he will tolerate it.

I have a cat sitter who he loves; if he will tolerate the Libre that will be a lot of the battle. She has arthritis and the little syringes might be challenging for her. Are the pens easier for administering insullin? Arnd are the Lantus pens interchangeable with the regular glargine?

The Libre is very easy to apply yourself. There’s a bunch of videos with how to, I’ve never used skin glue. Shave, clean, skin tac and then apply. I cover it with Tegaderm, and then put a shirt on him and so far they’ve stayed on the entire 14 days. He’s a very chill cat though.
I’m lucky to live in Canada and can just order the Libre online without a prescription.

The pens are easier to use, we chose to have our cat sitter use the pen instead of a syringe. The downside is you can only dose in whole units.
