Jinx 135

I've only been testing for about 11 days. This morning Jinx's BG was at 137 and I gave him his 1.5 of insulin. I realized later that maybe I shouldn't have given him his insulin at that number. I just ran home and checked him at 2.5 post shot and retested him. He was at 88. I gave him some cat food with gravy and will retest him again in two hours.

Do you all think I should of held off on the shot?
Should I be worried?

Hi Audra! I wouldn't wait another 2 hours to re-test. The 88 isn't close to where you'd need to intervene with high carb food or Karo/honey/syrup but he is dropping too much, too fast so we want to make sure he's not going to keep dropping or come up for a little while and then drop again.

Next, we really need to start seeing some Mid-cycle tests. Lantus dosing is based on how LOW it takes them, not how high the Pre-Shot is so without some mid-cycle tests, we have no idea if he needs more insulin or actually may need less. You also need to get at least a "before bed" test on the PM cycle....not only for the extra data but because most cats go lower at night and we want to make sure he's safe while you're sleeping.

I think you can relax....next time, as long as he's above 50, try giving just a little of his regular low carb food to see if that's enough to slow down how fast he's dropping instead of going straight to the high carb stuff (but we all understand how scary it can seem at first when they drop like that!

On your spreadsheet, in the cells where you enter anything other than a number (like the @ sign), you have to color code that cell manually. The formatting only works when there's nothing except a number in the cell.

Thank you so much! I appreciate it. Yeah I panicked because it was his first time getting that low.

Hi Audra , since you are testing now with the Relion Meter, can you add that to your signature now, and can you update your SS with that 131 when you get a chance ,don't forget to color code those @ numbers manually. Jinx is such a cutie :cat:

The more tests you can do the better especially cat night, try and scatter the times each day ,like filling in the pieces of a puzzle

Edit. Audra I see you went from 1 unit to 1.5 units. We adjust doses by 0.25 units at a time.
Do you have the syringes with half unit markings, they make it easier to do that

Thank you! It’s so confusing hearing what the vet says and it’s different. I believe you all since you deal with this more. The vet wanted me to go from 1unit to 2 but I felt uncomfortable so we did 1.5. I’ll switch him to 1.25.

He’s bouncing from the 88 yesterday. It can take up to 6 cycles to clear but usually usually clears in about 4 or less. With the numbers you are seeing you could have had a symptomatic hypo had you upped the dose a full unit. Usually vets tend to keep the BG too high.

Audra try in get as many tests in as possible during both 12 hour cycles so we can get a better idea how the insulin is working for Jinx, if you work try and get them in on the weekends.
Scatter the test times around such as
+3, +6, +9
Next day maybe @+4, +7 +10
Like filling in pieces of a puzzle
You really need to be getting some tests in at night
At night get a before bed test so you can see if it's lower than his PMPS test
The more data you collect the better

One other thing, when posting on the lantus board we do a new post everyday
You would post like this
Date, then Jinx, then the AMPS # and any other tests you do after that, you can continue with the PMPS test
We attach the previous days post to the new one in case we have to go back to it, do you see how I put your previous post on here in post #10, the numbers of the posts are on the right hand side

So you can start posting this way tomorrow on the lantus board
3-13 Jinx. AMPS# and any tests after that

Can you add SLGS to your spreadsheet also up top
I would listen to the members here ,some have over 25 years of experience, if it wasn't for the members here giving me advice for Tyler he wouldn't be in remission today
