Dear all,

My cat's name is Tuturel (15y old) and my name is Karin.
She was diagnosed on 28.02.22, this Monday, it's all very new to us, super anxiety in our little family (on top of this other crap in Eastern Europe). Trying to read as much as possible and educate myself on this as quickly as possible.
Started Caninsulin yesterday morning, so gave 3 dozes so far
Diet is Grau wet food (as I've read it's ok)
Measured today's nadir at the vet's office and was 4.2 which they said it's perfect.

But both yesterday and today, around 3-4 hours after morning injection she felt sick with loud howling and threw up foot eaten some more than 1 hour before.
Anybody has any idea what could it be? Anybody seen vomiting as a reaction at insulin/hypoglycemia stuff?

Hello Tuturela, and sorry to see that you have found us. I hope we can be of some help.

Vomiting could be a lot of different things--eating too fast on an empty stomach, intestinal inflammation or irritation caused by hair, too much acid in the stomach, kidney dysfunction. Hyperglycemia can cause nausea and an unwillingness to eat after ketones have built up in the blood. Did your veterinarian test for ketones? Caninsulin is not the best insulin for cats--we recommend Prozinc or Lantus if you can get it where you live.

Hi, have you seen the information available here on hypoglycemia. https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/how-to-treat-hypos-they-can-kill-print-this-out.15887/

Vomiting isn't listed as a symptom, but it could still be hypoglycemia. If her nadir was 4.2 it is possible that it could be lower at home and may vary from day to day. That is why testing at home with a blood glucose meter is the best way to keep our kitties safe.

How much insulin are you giving her?

I’m giving her a total of 1.5 units (less than 0.5/kg, she weights 3.6 kg). I did read the hypo posts, bought a monitor and trying to measure BG at home but it’s quite challenging I must say:( . Doc didn’t measure ketones.
She started to eat less, I gave her the morning food and barely touched it
I’ll probably have to skip this dose, how bad is it if we skip a dose?

Thank you so much for your replies, much appreciated!
She’s not feeling so well this morning and barely touched food, I’ll probably skip the morning dose.
I’ll check on Monday with the vet if there’s anything except Caninsulin here.

Are you able to check at a pharmacy and get Ketostix (or the equivalent). These are strips that you dip in your cat's urine to get a reading of the ketones in urine. If your cat isn't feeling well, testing for ketones can be important. I would not give a Caninsulin injection if your cat isn't eating. Caninsulin will drop your cat's blood glucose to a potentially low range without food. Is there any vet around you can check with? Getting a blood glucose test is important, as well.

Hometesting is challenging when you start, but it does get easier. Here's a link with great tips and advice.
