Hello, I am doing a BG curve on Prince today because I have noticed his pre-shots have been getting lower so I want to see how low his BG drops to see if I should decrease his insulin dose. Since starting him on insulin in January I have had to decrease the dose from 2 to 1.5 and current dose is 1.25. I just tested him at +4 and he is at 2.1 and re-test right away was 2.7. I no this is low but I don't want to start giving a bunch of food and cause crazy numbers for the rest of the day so I'm wondering what I should do next? I gave him his regular snack(1/2 can of fancy feast) at 10am. Next snack would be at 2pm. I can check his BG as often as needed at this point. Should I check every 30 minutes and see if it starts to go back up and if it gets lower than 2, then start giving more foods? He currently has no symptoms of low BG. Thanks!

+4.5 BG 2.2 - 1/2 can fancy feast given
+5 BG 2.8
+6 BG 3.6
+7 BG 5.3 - 1/2 can fancy feast
+9 BG 7.2

You need to reduce Prince's dose , new dose should be 1 unit, because his BG dropped below 90

Angela I would start posting on the lantus forum
When posting on the lantus we post everyday, this is how you would post
Example
Date first, then Prince, then AMPS # and any tests after that, then attach your previous days thread to it

I did a search and found this that one of our members said

60 or higher: LC (0-10% carb) + test in an hour
50-59 : MC (11-15% carb) + test every 30 minutes
49 or below: HC (>16% carb) + test every 15-20 minutes and then for two hours after the lowest number appeared until they start going up
He needs to stay up for 2 hours without food

I'll tag Elise for her to confirm to reduce and about what I just said above about what to feed and when
@tiffmaxee
And

@FrostD

@Suzanne & Darcy

Do you have any med and high carb wet foods . Such as
Med and High Carb food

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Gourmet Beef Feast in Gravy 20% High Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Gourmet Chicken Feast in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Turkey Feast in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Chicken and Beef in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Good idea to mark the cans with magic marker how many carbs

You need to be also testing during the night cycle , you are only seeing half the picture and may be missing a low number where you would need to reduce his dose

@tiffmaxee

@Elizabeth and Bertie

@FrostD

@Suzanne & Darcy

Thanks ladies

Hello, yes I will reduce his insulin dose to 1 unit. I also did get the different carb % Fancy Feasts and gave him some today. I forgot about posting in the Lantus group. That was mentioned ro me before, sorry. The night testing is tough for me to do during the week when I work but I can try that on the weekend.

Even if you can get a before bed test
will be good just to see if it's lower than his PMPS and he might need more monitoring :cat:
By the way Prince is adorable :cat:

Hmm didn't get the tag. You already shot, so we'll see how tonight goes. I am wondering if a one-time token dose might have been better to help drain the depot since that 37 was pretty low and not much testing before that. I am also wondering if you need a larger reduction because SLGS cutoff is 90. I will re-tag @tiffmaxee as well as @Bandit's Mom

@Angela and Prince
If you are doing SLGS you have not been taking the reductions when you need to.
I can see on 1/28 where Prince dropped to 74 and 47 and on 2/4 where he dropped to 50 where a reduction in dose was not taken.

Regarding the testing in the PM cycles…..are you able to get a before bed test in each night? That would help a lot. And that will give you a heads up if the cycle is likely to drop lower.
I think the reduction to 1 unit should be OK. See what @tiffmaxee and @Bandit's Mom think.

I was not aware of the SLGS method or any method at that time. I was following my vet, who unfortunately, had it all wrong. I am trying to follow the SLGS method now and have stopped looking to my vet for advice. That was a big learning curve for me with this, not being able to trust the vet.

I can check his BG at bedtime for sure and can try to get sone night xhecks in as well.

Thanks!

I just had to chime in on the learning curve/not being able to just rely on the vet thing because holy @#$% can I relate

I mean like, my whole life with cats, as a child growing up and then as a fur-parent adult...the vet is gospel. You have a problem with kitty, the vet is where you turn. Then this diabetes diagnosis comes around and it's like the vet is bloody useless and now I'm on my own. wtf, seriously.

thank the Great Kittah In the Sky for this forum and all the people here so generous with their time and mental energy.

That reminds me I think I will do another paypal donation, I know running this forum isn't free.

Hi Angela, you might like to start posting over on the Lantus page now where there are lots of people who can help you.
LANTUS FORUM link.
Over there you do a new post each day and you put the date, cats name and AMPS and any questions you might have.
For example you would write 3/5 Prince AMPS xxx and then maybe dosing advice.
Do you have a hypo kit set up?
Good luck moving forward!

Thanks I have had a few people mention this. I looked at the forum. It looks very confusing lol. Do you have to post everyday or can you post randomly when you need help?

I felt the same way when this was suggested, I was like oh no another thing to figure out.

It is not that confusing. Yes you should try to post every day, but you don't have to. Threads should have a thread title like this "3/4 Prince AMPS ____"

and then as you test throughout the day you edit the thread title and add test info like this "3/4 Prince AMPS _____ +3 _____" (you would have his numbers where I put the blanks)

Angela is you are going to follow SLGS please add that to your signature so we know, tap on your name and a drop down will appear tap on signature add SLGS and hit save
