? Cabergoline and Urinary Tract Inflammation

So Charlie was to the Emergency Vet yesterday drank as per diary - had 1 ltr of water over night and 3 wees and 1 poo grade 3/4. Has had another big drink and food this morning and hasn't gone to the toilet. He usually eats drinks and wees in that order and another drink. Public holiday today so will keep a close eye on him. Now 9am no wees and meowing a lot. Waiting for urine sample and taking him to AHVEC, if no wee in an hour will just take him but when I rang they informed me they were very busy. So got to after hour vets at 9:30 with urine taken at 9:13. Waited an hour for vet he was so stressed. No bacteria in urine and results where very boring according to vet nothing, but have given antibiotics as per last time because he improved. So what's going on? Is the body fighting something else or is it just the Acro playing games? Ok so on AMOXYCLAV. So investigating his symptoms and found Urine Tract Inflammation. This is Charlie to a tea. Found some information and suggested that I try Corn silk tea, which I have done and D-Mannose. I will also ask Deanna about Buprenorphine. -
So I have gone back through my Diary and found the following information:

Cabergoline 50mcg started on 13 Jan 2022
- Emergency Vet on 15 Jan 2022 -with Blood in Urine. - treated for Bacteria Infection in Urine. (no eveidence)
- 15 days later Emergency Vet 30 Jan 2022 - Painful meow when urinating - treated for bacteria infection in Urine (no eveidence)
- 15 days later Emergency Vet 14 Feb 2022 - as above in Diary.

Has anyone else had this side effect on Cabergoline? PS just spoke to my Vet and as per the ultrasound he had on Friday - she said there was no inflammation of bladder or urethrae (as far as they could see) at the time.

This might be better for acro forum, but no I've not heard that as a side effect. What about FLUTD?

Something to consider - UTIs pretty common in diabetic cats, especially unregulated ones. Bacteria thrive on the extra sugar. So it sounds to me like something is lingering or he's prone

I will say Mr Kitty currently has a touch of PU/PD but BG still in normal range without insulin. But he's been on cab since July, so I think the more realistic explanation is I need to go get kidneys checked/some labs done.
 
UTI's are somewhat common in diabetic cats, especially those with high blood sugars. I haven't seen a tie in to cabergoline, as lots of non acro cats here get it too.

I agree with Melissa, other types of FLUTD like idiopathic cystitis could be considered. I had a cat with this condition the week after Neko was diagnosed diabetic. How big are the wees compared to usual? Smaller more frequent pees are a sign. He licking himself "down there"? It is a painful condition so buprenorphine a good idea. I also gave Cerenia, mostly for it's anti-inflammatory properties and we went on Cartrophen.

Thanks it is FLUTD but it only started when we started the Cabergoline but just wondering if anyone else has had the problem? I can't find anything relating the Cabergoline and the side effect being FLUTD, constipation etc yes. The ultrasound results were great no liver disease (that I forgot he had) kidney improved, IBD there but improved, along with lining of stomach and intestines. Also heart is great.

I'm waiting for my vet to send through Charlie's results so I have on file so I can do more investigating.
 
I truly don't think they are related, but you could try every other day dosing if it would make you feel better (I think you are daily?). I think it's the sugar in urine and kidney troubles "at fault"

When I can't find info on cab in cats (it is used for other things in cats so fairly well documented in that respect), I look it up for humans. Not the same, but at least maybe gives a hint. I don't see anything about that in dogs or cats

Hi Wendy the wees are smaller and he is meowing when going to the toilet and yes is licking down there. My vet is organising Buprenorphine now, I got in touch with a facebook page Feline Lower Urinary Tract. They have some suggestion including a Corn Silk tea and D-Monnose.

My Vet and I are looking at going every 48 hours with the Cabergoline. I had a look at human side effects last night and again nothing for FLUTD. Thank you
 
This is not a problem that we had on Cabergoline. I'm sorry about the FLUTD. Keep in mind that not all bacteria are able to be cultured. Some grow well in their own "environment" and don't grow well in a culture medium. I'm sure you are right about the FLUTD though. Sounds painful.

Just an update on Charlie Bear.
Wow this Corn-silk tea is great, I have 5 litter boxes and they were full this morning and he didn't wake me up with meowing, so I didn't know that he went. Still drank 1ltr of water over night. 1 grade 3 poo.
I haven't given him the D-Mannose as I want to check with my Vet, but reading into Corn-silk it can actually help in lowering BG levels. He has had Buprenorphin am and pm so this might be helping as well.
