? 2/12 Hendrick AMPS 455 +3 249 + 4 224 PMPS 418

I always liked to be able to monitor for a couple of cycles. Max sometimes responded on the second or third cycle though.

that makes sense. Last increase for Hendrick, he responded immediately with blues and a green 92 that day -- his first recorded green ever. It made me think that 1.5u was going to be great for him but since then, only the one green and a few blues. I don't get it

Welcome to fd. Max was known as Mr. Unpredictable by those who knew him. For most it’s a marathon rather than a race. For the lucky it then becomes a race to the finish line.

@FrostD yikes, moved to testing for Ketones only once a week and of course, the first time we test in a week he has gone from .4 to 1.3

I thought he seemed a wee bit off yesterday then I thought i was imagining it. His weight is down a bit as well, last weigh-in was 10.7, today 10.3!

Kinda scary tbh

He seems bright alert, energetic. Ran on the cat wheel. although maybe not quite himself yesterday and today --- barely noticeable so really wasnt sure if i was imagining it or not. Guess not.

I had reduced the size of the snacks he was getting because I didn't want to impact his BG as much. Well screw that I'm going right back to what I was doing that drove down those ketones so well before.

Yes. Keep the food and water coming, diabetes is always secondary. We manage BG with insulin, take care of other r things (weight, ketones, etc) first.

well I was getting about 250-300 calories a day into him but that dropped recently as we changed some food to even lower carb stuff so I'm actually not sure right now exactly how many calories he's been getting, but obviously not enough to keep those ketones away

far as ideal weight, we have a vet appt next Thurs and that is a question I have. My guess would be he is underweight right now but not by much at 10.3 lbs,

I'd guess ideal is 11 or 12. He used to hover around 12 for a long time. And looked fairly lean, not overweight.

I have a kitchen scale that I use to portion out food. I would calculate the total number of calories in the food per ounce, and portion it out every meal by the ounce. When I was trying to keep calories consistent but changed to a lower calorie food, I would increase the amount I fed. Lots of the Weruva foods are very low calorie and high in moisture, so I would feed more of that than I would other ones that were higher in calories. Weruva Cats in the Kitchen The Karate Kitty, for example, is only 15 calories per ounce, whereas Weruva Truluxe Glam N Punk is 35 calories per ounce. That's a big difference. So I would feed more Karate Kitty than I would Glam N Punk if I wanted to keep things more or less consistent. I was feeding Ruby between 150-180 calories per day to maintain her weight. She's on raw now, it's harder for me to know how many calories are in the meats I give her so I've stopped keeping track and she's on steroids that make her gain weight but I still use the kitchen scale to weigh out all of her meals so I know how many ounces she eats every day regardless of what I am feeding her.

the recipe for ketone development is -
not enough calories + not enough insulin + infection/inflammation/systemic stress
if you can get that many calories in him daily by all means do.Watch the numbers closely and let them be your guide in dosing. More insulin along with more calories help close the door to ketone development.
Without enough insulin food is not properly converted into energy and transported into the cells of the body. So the body breaks down its own muscle and fat for energy. The byproduct of this process is ketones. As ketones build up in the blood stream, the resulting pH and electrolyte imbalances can very quickly develop to life threatening levels , a state of DKA.

My BK went through it twice. Once he went from negative to large in exactly 24 hours He would not have survived a third round. Vigilance is required for those who have a kitty with a history of ketones.
