02/10 Misty PMPS 243 +8 353 AMPS 337 Dose?

Misty has been diabetic for over 2 years. We slowly worked up to a high dose of 4.5u, which she was on for 1.25 years. She is a feisty girl and I could not test her. I tested her urine frequently and monitored symptoms. On 01/29 she had her first hypo event, during which I managed to test her. We went to ER, came home on 01/31 where she had another hypo that I managed at home. I have had support on FB and in FDMB through this crisis and slowly increased her dose to 1u. Her numbers are still high. I'm thinking of doing TR, but am not confident I can do it. However, I think it's time for another increase to 1.25u tonight. What do you wise people think?

Hi Rowena, here are your first two posts on main health below, so people can read what has happened.
Basically Misty was sent home from the ER on 2 units of Lantus after a hypo event, (they gave the dose then discharged her) and she dropped again to 1.9 and Rowena posted on FB and main health FDMB for help.
She then get a freestyle libre fitted for $400! at the vet as she was having trouble getting any tests done herself, and it didn’t work. So that was $400 down the drain! So she has been trying to test herself and I think she is doing a fantastic job. She is managing to get a preshot test and a midcycle test in each cycle.
We started off with a low dose as we were not sure Rowena was going to be able to test Misty and have increased to 1 unit. Rowena feeds a low carb wet diet and is testing for ketones……so far nil.

If you can get a preshot test in and one during each cycle as you have been doing Rowena, I think you can do TR. We can then increase more frequently than with SLGS. And you can always change to SLGS method if you find you can’t manage TR.
I think an increase to 1.25 units tonight is a good idea.
Let’s see what others think.

@Bron and Sheba (GA) I agree that an increase to 1.25 and TR would be best if testing is going okay. I’d like to see a +2-3 though as if she drops a lot by then you will need to test again or at least make sure Misty eats and not wait until +5 or later. If the +2-3 isn’t a lot lower or is higher than the amps/ pmps a later test would not be needed.

I posted on FB about a FF broth I was giving Misty to allow me to test her. I've discovered it is not low carb. I was giving her 4 a day.
I only have 2 broths left. and I didn't get @tiffmaxee's message until after +3, so I decided not to do a mid cycle test, so she didn't get the mid cycle broth either. I'm not sure whether to give up the broths or give up the frequency of testing. I am going to try for another food for testing, but the only thing she loves as much gives her terrible diarrhoea (Felix Sensations Jellies). In addition, Karen Nicholson suggested I should hold the 1u amount for a week.
I will do the PMPS shortly. I think given all this I will stick to the 1u tonight and await your advice tomorrow. I won't be able to do a +2 or +3 overnight, because I need to sleep.
Thanks for your help. I guess I start a new post in the morning.

Did they say how high the broths were in carbs?
I would not give up the frequency of testing though. Hopefully you can find another broth she likes.
I used to make my own broth with just chicken legs boiled for several hours in water. Nothing added. Not sure if you have time to do that. But maybe worth a shot.
.
Given that the broths are higher carb it might be worth while holding off for a day or two to see if without the broth, the BG is lower.
Not sure I would wait a week though, if the BG remains high.
Yes new thread tomorrow.

Karen said it was probably "medium". Another lady commented that it didn't affect her cat's BG.

I’ve just read the FB thread. I’ll ask @Bandit's Mom if she can work out the carbs…..I’m just off to sleep…up early again.
I saw what Karen said about holding the dose for a week and then doing a curve. That is the SLGS method.
As Misty has been on Lantus for some time, holding the dose for 3 days and then increasing if necessary is fine if you are doing TR.
