My kitty has been losing 1/4 pound a month for several months. She has ibd as well as diabetes. The vet assumed her Ibd became lymphoma and put her on chlorambucil. It didn't stop the weight loss and I am frantic. I took her to an IM specialist who is retesting everything. Her diabetes is possible cause she is thinking about. Has anyone had a kitty who had continuous but consistent weight loss? We wasted months on chemo for cancer she didn't have. She is getting very skinny and I am terrified. Please share any information if your kitty has experienced anything like this weight loss. thank you

Hi, sorry to hear about your kitty. My kitty experienced some pretty extreme weight loss, ravenous appetite, drinking and peeing a lot--turns out she had ketoacidosis and was diagnosed as a diabetic. Once we got her on insulin (Lantus) and started testing and following the TR protocol, she stabilized.

It would be great if you could give us more information about her health profile. Is she eating well? What kind of food are you feeding her? Does she get nauseous from the chlorambucil? If so, are you giving her anti-nausea meds?

Was her diabetes caused by steroids for the IBD? What kind of insulin is she on? Are you hometesting? If you are not testing her blood for glucose, have you ever bought Ketodiastix to check urine for glucose and ketones?

We have lots of members here whose diabetic cats also have GI disorders, like my Ruby. We can help you if you can give us more information.

Thank you very much. My kitty eats fancy feast classic pate. Her appetite is good but not ravenous. Right now she is on 1.5 units of Lantus twice daily. I have not been able to test at home. I can't get blood..
Her vet has done monthly spot checks and they are not high.. that is why I am wondering if she can be losing weight if her glucose is not high.
She eats about every hour a little bit because she can't handle much food at one time. Her glucose spot checks have gotten lower. One was 70, one was.the highest at about 180. Because I don't test it wouldn't surprise me if her glucose level goes up and down but generally not over 200. Could that cause weight loss? I thought it was high l

The Specialist is pretty much insisting she gets a freestyle libre.

Has she had her thyroid levels checked?
Maybe look for some low carb food that is higher is calories than the FF is. Kitten food tends to be higher in calories, protein and fat than ordinary cat food.

Thank you for your response. She was just retested for thyroid and started on the medicine. However her thyroid levels just got higher and have been normal until this month. So there must be something else going on. I am going to get the freestyle as requested by the new vet. She thinks looking closely at her glucose levels maybe important. I don't home test and have taken her to the vet for testing. I think it makes sense that this could be at least part of the problem. I know these are imperfect but will help get an idea. I would be relieved in a way because I can get better and she will get better

When was the last time she had an ultrasound? How was the IBD or SCL diagnosed? Was she on prednisolone or budesonide?
