After an excruciating 3 days in which I had to travel, I was home to my babies today. The morning I left, I was feeling pretty good about where Fred was, as he was very happy the night before, and he had eaten all his breakfast the morning of. I'd also gotten an ondansetron in him, which I hoped would hold him for 24 hours. However, when my pet sitter arrived that evening, Fred had become completely anorexic again. Thank GOD she is amazing, and, for the next 3 days, was able to pill him every 12 hours in addition to everything else. Though he outright refused his wet food, he ate enough dry to get us through. I was sick with worry and stress, especially when he vomited yesterday afternoon. Nauseous though he's been, he had not vomited. I was convinced he was going into DKA. Thank God-.2 ketones.
We went to the vet this afternoon. I couldn't get in with my regular vet, so I had to go through his whole story once again. But to try and make a long story short, they did in house blood work as well as x-rays.
Bloodwork: stable and all pretty good since his last labs in early Dec. They will send out for fPLI, etc. However, his potassium was a little low, which they said could be due to the vomiting. (he also vomited in his carrier on the ride over) They gave me a paste supplement which I KNOW he will not take. Any advice on that?
Blood pressure good-110
Urinalysis- all good as well. Good Specific Gravity at 1.043, no ketones or infection seen
X-ray: Here's where my heart is breaking. She felt his stomach looked "odd" "not like she'd expect it to look". She apparently called my normal vet over to look, and she concurred. She said it could be nothing, but it does look odd. It's never "nothing" when they say that. :-((( She did say it is close to the pancreas, and that could cause it, but I'm not sure I'm buying that. And, she said she sees what "could be a mass" above his bladder, though it also could be the end of his intestine. She was only able to visualize it on one view. Her gut feeling is that it is intestine, but bottom line, he needs an ultrasound. We hope it will be Monday.
I also asked that the x-ray be sent out for a radiation consult, as if I can get it tomorrow, maybe that will help clarify things.
I'm in shock, I think. I didn't want to admit that this could be anything other than pancreatitis. But I'm nauseous myself with fear.
Has anyone every come across something with the stomach like this? (I can't even think about the possible mass as well :-(()
In the good news front, he got a shot of ondansetron, and I was sent home with the vial. Guess who ate his wet food for the first time in a week?? So it works, but the questions remains, will it sting? I asked the tech, and she said she really didn't think so. We'll see. He also got fluids.
Not a good update, I'm afraid.
