Seems Bama is eating less and less each day, all of his food "tainted" with "bad feels". Gave him 3 oral doses of Ondansetron yesterday. I have the injectable vials and will start injections this morning. The needles are screw on 27G and 1/2 inch long. Maybe they won't be much more noticeable than his insulin needles. Plan to offer a snack of Delectables Bisque, similar to Squeeze Up but more liquid and more of it, while I inject. I did not get the IV set with the port for injectables, although I may wish I had done so, if the experience is horrible. I don't know if the effectiveness would be the same through the sub-q line as directly under the skin. Could lose some in the leakage. He doesn't have a lot of leakage but trying to hold him down to "close the hole" once the needle comes out is not always possible.The amount of Ondansetron to be injected is 2ml at 2mg per ml, once daily under the skin.
 
The first Ondansetron injection went better than I had hoped. At +4 I went into his room. He got up from his bed and came over for his test and I gave him some LC Weruva canned food plus about half a packet of Delectables Bisque. While he was eating, I gave the injection much like I do with his insulin and he appeared not to notice. Afterwards, I syringed some water into his mouth and he went and got into his bed that is inside a box where it is private, dark and cozy. I could see from his water bowls that he has been drinking this morning. I left out some kibble. I checked just now and he is still napping inside his boxed bed, although he did raise his head to look at me. He has not eaten the kibble. Sub-q is in a couple hours. He may want a snack then.
 
Poor Bama, glad the Delectables Bisque is palatable. I’d give him as much as he wants to eat of the Bisque (within reason of course since it’s just meat and not a complete nutritional profile) if you’re having trouble getting enough calories in him. It’s low carb and easy to get down.
Temp’s favorite is the new no seafood beef version. The duck is a close second. You can get them delivered monthly with Amazon Subscribe and Save for even cheaper.

Anyone know if the Delectables Bisque is low phosphorus? Moderate phosphorus?
 
Despite the Ondansetron, Bama threw up sometime between +8 & +10. Wondering if I could inject another round of Ondansetron and how often? I know the oral can be given more than once per day. Yes, this is a question for the prescribing vet but she is out of the office until Saturday and the vet in the office has never seen Bama so the receptionist did not want to pass along the question for that reason. Any ideas? @Suzanne & Darcy

"The problem is that cats seem to vary widely in their ability to utilise ondansetron. Oral, subcutaneous and intravenous pharmacokinetics of ondansetron in healthy cats (2014) Quimby JM, Lake RC, Hansen RJ, Lunghofer PJ & Gustafson DL Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics 37(4) pp348–353 says that "Poor bioavailability should be taken into account when determining a route of administration for a patient as individual oral bioavailability ranged from 11 to 50% in the cats used in this study." You may therefore need to experiment to find the optimum dose and frequency for your cat.

For acute vomiting, such as in a cat with pancreatitis, higher dosing may be necessary. For chronic nausea in CKD cats, however, many people find a dose of 1mg is fine, but needed at least twice daily, and if that doesn't work, then three times daily. Very occasionally, cats need ondansetron four times a day.

I would start with a dose of 1 mg twice a day, and if you find this is not enough, speak to your vet about increasing the frequency initially, and if necessary, the dose."​

1 mg twice per day of ondansetron would be way too low for Bama Kitty. At 14.8 lbs, or 6.72 kg, he could easily go to 3 mg and up to 6 mg if needed per dose. And up to 3 times per day if needed. My Neko was a bit lighter than BK and I mistakenly did 1 mg dosing. It was way too little but before the 2016 paper came out, so vets were dosing less then.

I agree. I probably should have dropped that part off. I think too low as well. That was Helen's recommendation from the felinecrf website. I think Bama needs more now.
