So after another, even more epic, wrestling match with Fred yesterday, I got another dose in. This time, it did not seem like so much of a magic bullet, but that also could be because we were both really traumatized from the effort of getting the pill in. I tried the gelcap...it just half melted and caused the whole thing to stick on his gums. So I went back to my cheeseball, and he was wise to that. Finally, I "glued" it onto a PureBite treat, and he went for it. (much to my surprise-he's learned that's usually a no-go)

However, about 2 hours later, he vomited up his dinner. He didn't howl or make a scene...just quietly went into the bathroom and yakked. I DID give him his old formulation of raw chicken last night, to see if he might like it again. I was so pleased when he ate it well, but then...the vomit about 20 minutes later. He really never vomits.

I still think the ondansetron helps, but the pilling is not going to be a long term option, I can tell. Has anyone out there used injectable ondansetron, and have they found it stings? (like I know Cerenia does)

I am sorry that I have never used it before. I guess you can try. Keep it cold maybe? Poor Fred. I feel sorry for him. And I feel sorry for you trying so hard to help Fred and he is definitely not helping you out with that. It makes us feel so sad and hurts when they think we are being mean to them, doesn’t it.

What else does Fred eat that could mask a pill? Pill pockets? Cream cheese? Liverwurst? Baby food (ham) squeeze up treats?

It just sucks the life out of me when I am trying to get a sick cat to eat. If they eat, I feel good… if they don’t eat no matter what I offer… I am depressed and feel hopeless.
 
I have ne er used it either. Keeping cerenia cold didn’t work for me. I tried twice and gave up. Sometimes injecting into a fluid bubble helps if giving sub-q fluids I have read. I have a feeling ondansetron would sting as well.

It does. It was horrible to fight him. And then he just looked at me with an expression of....sad betrayal. Like, "Why, Mom? Why are you doing this to me?" His ears were down sideways against his head, and he looked miserable. I was just sick over it.

The good news is that I was able to dose him yesterday by "gluing" it to a treat. It must be significantly less bitter than Cerenia because he's willing to go for the treat even though I know he knows something is up. We'll see how long I can make that work. It helps him so much. 30 minutes later and he wants to eat the house down. It also worries me, for I really do hope this *is* panc related, and not something else lurking.

I have seen a video done by a friend of mine with her technique for hiding a pill inside of a temptation treat. This involves opening them up and putting it inside with the stuffing and then putting the halves together.

When is the last time he had labs done? It can’t be that long ago can it? I looked at your SS but didn’t see any there. But if his labs were okay last time with kidney values and such… and it hasn’t been that long…. then it’s probably just pancreatitis.
 
Kathleen, I tagged you on the post but just in case it didn’t work, please read today’s (1/13) post for BamaKitty. Gina has just tried using the injectable Ondansetron for Bama. The first injection went well. I wanted you to see it.
 
Kathleen, I have also struggled with getting the oral Ondansetron down but have found the best option is to put it inside a gelcap. You are right, it does tend to stick to his gums but I have found that when I syringe a bit of water first and then follow with a syringe of water, it helps it to unstick and slide on down as he swallows the water. What I have going for me is Bama actually likes having water syringed into his mouth. He will take it at the front of his mouth, lapping with his tongue and occasionally sucking on the end of the syringe almost as though he is nursing. Of course, when the gelcap is inside his mouth, I have to syringe through his clenched teeth toward the back of his mouth. He swallows, water and pill. And I usually get a few more syringes of water down him just to make sure the pill is truly swallowed and does not work its way out somehow.

I actually thought I was going to be out all day today, but as it turns out, our event was canceled. And since I'm seeing what happens with no Zofran today, I was afraid he might not eat as much. And I'm paranoid. ;-)

Almost exactly a month ago, when all this first started. They were strangely...great. (x fingers, x fingers!) Not even an elevated fPLI. So I was very relieved, but if the fPLI wasn't elevated... We still did go with panc flare Dx because the vet said they can still have flares without the fPLI showing.

Totally did this, but with the new Instinct Freeze-dried raw bits I bought to try out! They fell apart a bit, but with the American cheese sticking it together, it got the job done. Monsieur does not lower himself to Temptations. :rolleyes:

@Bama Kitty Mom Thank you so much for your input! I replied in the other thread as well. Fred likes to drink from the faucet, so maybe he WOULD accept water. I will look forward to hearing how your ondansetron injections go, but most importantly, I hope they help Bama very soon!
