My 15yr old boy Solomon has been well managed for a few years now. He is a real grazer, eating little bits at a time throughout the day. We found ourselves a surprise cat on Christmas Eve (she was found living behind the husbands shop and it’s a cold winter!) She and Solly are getting along great but she is a starving young cat and eats alll of the food.

Since they’ve been sharing a space this week, we’ve tried to figure out how to keep food open for Solly so he can get to it without the new cat Pepper getting at it.

he’s a bit reluctant to eat when she is, even if it’s on the other side of the room.

the last three nights, Solly has had a bad BG dip. He is on 2 units of Lantus twice daily and his usual range is 7-8 on the Alphatrack monitor. These nights it’s gone under 3, which is bad. We have to force syrup in his mouth and then he will eat his food and he goes back to normal behaviour.

I guess my main questions is: has anyone dealt with a slow eater and a fast one, how did you keep them separate? I searched the page but couldn’t find much but my wording was probably off!

Hi and welcome back. How lovely you have rescued a kitty.
There are a couple of things you can do. You could put Solomon in to a separate room during the night so he has access to his food, or you could look at getting a automatic feeder for Solomon with a chip attached that only opens for him and lets him eat the food. If finances allowed you could get them one each, but they are more expensive than normal auto feeders but people who have them say they are worth the money and would certainly solve your problem..

If Solomon dropped under 3 on the alphatrak meter, the insulin dose needs to be reduced to 1.75 units to keep him safe.
What type of food are you feeding Solomon?
Would you be interested in setting up a spreadsheet for Solly? We can help you?
