Hi, my name is Selina. My mom has a 14 yr old diabetic cat, Griffin. Last week she called and said that he wasn't walking right on his back legs and that he had started trembling and wouldn't eat and so we thought that it sounded like his sugar had dropped really low and she gave him some honey and he started acting normal again. Said that she hadn't been staying on schedule with it or something and I just found out tonight that she has not gave him any insulin at all in a few days. She had been giving him four units in the morning and four units at night per the vet. After his sugar dropped she gave him two units one day and then hasn't gave him any. She called tonight because she said he is drinking a lot of water and does not want to eat. I'm thinking his sugar is high. Should she go ahead and give him some insulin if so how much? She does not have anything to test it with. I told her that I had just found this page and was going to see what everyone else said. Her vet of course did not want her to do testing at home. She has been giving him insulin for several years. I'm trying to get her to take him to a different fit this week. The one she has been taking him to just cares about money. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for very much.

We need more information. What insulin is your mom using? I am concerned that there is the possibility of diabetic ketoacidosis. Not eating, not enough insulin, and any possibility of an inflammation or infection could result in diabetic ketoacidosis. It would probably be best if your mom got her kitty to a vet.

Can your mother go out and buy a bottle of Ketostix from a pharmacy or Walmart and test the urine for ketones. This is important!
Stopping insulin is not a good idea without knowing what the blood glucose is.
I think a new vet would be a great idea.
I would encourage your mother to hometest the blood glucose. It’s the only way to really know what’s going on and if the dose is working.
It’s really important he eats otherwise he will run into other problems.

- Get a bottle of Ketostix and test the urine for ketones. If he has any ketones in the urine, take him to the vet immediately.
- Get the kitty to eat something….any food is ok at the moment. Even dry food. He must eat
- If he won’t eat for you I would take him to the vet today. He needs to be getting insulin and food, other wise he could develop diabetic ketoacidosis as Sienne suggested which is an emergency.
