? Freezing Temps & Vaccinations for Sick Kitty?

Hi, all. I haven't been here since Bubba died, but I find myself in need of advice for one of my kitties. I knew this was the place to go.

We were adopted by a stray a few years ago - I would guess Mr. T is around 5 years old now. T lives under the house, unfortunately, because we are bursting at the seams with cats in the house. T started losing weight a few months ago. He was getting pretty scrawny, so I took him in for a checkup. He's lost about 1/3 of his body weight and is under 8#. Bloodwork has come back clear; he is jaundiced but liver enzymes are ok. We're waiting on hemoplasma to see if he has a bacterial blood infection.

This weekend, we will have overnight temps in the teens, so I am boarding Mr. T so he'll be warm at night. I didn't want to drop $550 on him and then let him freeze! Everything was grand until they noticed he hadn't been vaccinated since 2019. I got a call from the vet today saying they will vaccinate him in order to board. He had an overnight stay in their hospital earlier this week, and vaccination wasn't an issue then.

I argued that he's too sick to be vaccinated. I was told that if he boards, he gets vaccinated. I'm not sure what to do.

I'd appreciate suggestions. Thank you!
 
As much as I wouldn’t like it, they do require it. Ask them to just do the rabies shot or whatever the minimum is. I hope you figure out what the issue is. Was the thyroid checked?
 
Thanks, JanetNJ - I'll ask them to do the bare minimum. They have checked thyroid, liver, sugar, leukemia, and aids. All ok. He was dehydrated so they gave him fluids, and has diarrhea so he's on meds for that. He eats like crazy but no weight gain.

Do you have a copy of the labs you could post?
 
They haven't done a fecal, but they may have checked for heartworm. I have treated him for round worms, and he has had Revolution on him. If I don't forget when I take him in tomorrow, I'll ask about a copy of his labs.

I would ask them to do a fecal while he's there. Very common if he's an outside cat.
 
Thanks for all your wonderful replies. T went in to board Friday last week and received the minimal vaccinations. I brought him home Monday afternoon; he'd had a messy poo at boarding and had been bathed, so he just came straight into the house. I couldn't put a wet cat out in the cold. We "boarded" him in the guest bathroom where he had loose poo all over the place. Food was literally running through him as fast as I could feed him. The vet gave me a couple of cans of Purina EN. He loved the pate that I gave him on Wednesday. On Thursday I fed him shreds in gravy. He lapped the gravy off the shreds and that was pretty much the last thing he ate. He went downhill fast. Thursday night I force-fed some Tiki Cat Velvet (I really hate wheated food and wasn't going to put any more of the gravy into him). Friday morning we found him cold and barely breathing. He died not long afterwards. I will never know what was wrong with him, but I'm now leaning toward cancer. I'm glad we brought him in. He ended his time with us warm and in my husband's arms. We will miss Mr. T very much.
