Yes I’m so sorry I’ll get rid of the lines to make things clearer ! Okay I’m gonna feed a large meal and shoot him up I’m home with him and can test much more reliably now we have a vet appointment in 3 hours also !

You can feed him now. A good schedule if you can manage it is a meal at shot time, and then two or three smaller meals between the shot and +6 (6 hours after the shot). The logic: Lantus becomes effective two to three hours after the shot in most cats. You want food on board to even out the effect. Once you are able to record more tests, you will have a clearer picture of how good affects the numbers in Ziggy. You want to avoid feeding after +6 as that is when the action of the insulin starts to wane, so feeding during that time might be counterproductive. This is an every cat is different situation though. I feed my cat after +6, only because I know her well and she is on medications that make her react to insulin differently.

thank you so much very veryyyy good to know I’ll have to reschedule some of his medications so that feeding times are more arranged ! Hoping to collect more data so I can understand everything a bit more
 
Hey everyone! Ziggy did great at the vet today and I can’t wait to get his labs back ! They said they’re hopeful about the Libre because of how well his paw healed after surgery !

Most importantly Is there a certain space in the SS where I mark meals ? Like his +11 amps today was 202 but since we were at the vet most of the day he did eat a small snack about an hour before that reading am I supposed to be marking meal times the way I mark BG readings ?
 
Great news about the vet visit and about the Libre.

We ask people to note in the comments of the SS if they've fed anything other than the usual LC - this applies when the cat is going low and higher carbs are fed to bring numbers up or keep them from dropping. Over time this gives the CG enough data on how the cat responds to carbs.

Some folks record all food fed in a day - it's not necessary, but you can do that if you want to. These are some who do:

Thank you so much I’m absolutely going to check that out especially since we’re switching to a home cooked diet within the next few weeks! Made by a nutritionist who is aware of all his needs including low carb. This home cooked diet will have even less carbs than I’m feeding now so I’m going to have to be diligent and cautious when I do make the slow change. I do record it in my journal at home as well as his insulin I keep it all together because it helps me understand a little I think !
 
Oh how I wish we could do raw we tried that and it almost killed him because of the FIV I presume. Even harmless bacteria is dangerous for a kitty like Ziggy it’s so hard because all his diagnosis’s contradict eachother
 
Thank you so much I’m trying so hard he really is my everything I’ve always loved all my kitties, bottlefeeds and fosters but something about the relationship between you and your special needs is penetrating he’s wrapped around the heart strings in part of my heart I’ve never felt before I’d imagine this is what children feel like I can’t think of anything deeper he has had a really rough life and I would give anything 10 years of my own for just 2 happy healthy years for him poor guy never gets a break in his honor I’m definitely going to do more work with special needs animals in the future (FIV IBD and diabetes in particular) not because I care for them more but because I’ll be more knowledgeable about those issues. I’m a newbie to diabetes now but we were newbies with IBD at one time also I know we’ll get there but if it weren’t for groups like this we wouldn’t have made it this far to begin with almost all the things that saved his butt came from groups like this and caring experienced people and the tools for learning within the groups are a godsend I appreciate you all from the bottom of my heart these last two years have really restored my faith in humanity with how many people are not only willing to go above and beyond for their fur babies but are also willing to give their time to help other peoples fur babies what an amazing and truly life saving community <3
 
I know some people have had success on it I do truly believe it’s great for some kitties and normally I’ll try anything twice except that… he was literally on deaths door within 48 hours of transitioning to raw, he was hospitalized for over a week this was before I was even aware of his FIV and IBD status and it all started after that it was a 3-4 month in and out of the ER during the initial dx it was horrible I’m sure there’s a raw diet out there that could possibly work for him but it would be very risky to try maybe I’m just traumatized from it all but I do have a nutritionist making a home cooked diet for us with IBD FIV diabetes and chronic pancreatitis all in focus I know raw has done so many wonderful things for many peoples fur babies I strongly believe mine isn’t one of them just like peanut butter could be great for me but it may kill someone else

I’ve tried for so long to research the different strains of FIV one of the more less common strains is one that affects the GI, it’s a much less common than a strain would predominantly effect the teeth or upper respiratory I’ve tried to researched the correlation between IBD/(chronic diarrhea) and FIV and I think that since the FIV and IBD flared up simultaneously there has to be some sort of connection my gut tells me raw isn’t his answer he’s been doing well on rayne clinical nutrition it’s just higher of a carb count than I would like so I’m gonna cook him some rabbit
 
It's good that you gave raw a try, though I'm sorry to hear it might have been the reason Ziggy landed in the hospital.

Thanks for the kind thoughts! I'm with you on juggling lots of complications. Ruby's doing really well outside of her diabetes being hard to manage because of the steroids and her chronic constipation. The pred has reduced the thickening of her intestines to zero, she's eating well, no throwing up, gaining weight (knocking hard on wood!). She also had early stage CKD, but all of her recent check ups show things are stable. Thankfully all of this happened to Ruby during the pandemic when I was working only part-time from home and I was able to learn everything I could from the good people here not only about diabetes but every aspect of taking care of older, complicated cats. The FDMB has been around for so long that no stone in cat care has been left unturned. I'm so glad you found us! :bighug:
 
Wow that sounds like a lot to juggle as well I’m glad Ruby is doing well she has an amazingly dedicated and immensely smart furr mama so she won half that war im so glad to hear the pred reduced her intestinal wall thickening to zero that is quite the accomplishment I know that many times the wall thickening can reduce but having it come down to zero is pretty rare I think congratulations on your victory there it’s admirable that through it all you’re still so positive it’s beautiful to try and find silver linings I’m glad you were around when Ruby started going through all of this I know what you mean I was happy that I have a job where I can take off for extended periods of time without losing my job I need to be home to be able to be with my baby when things like this happen so I know how you feel exactly! You’re right the rabbit is so super expensive but rabbit and kangaroo seem to be the only thing Ziggy does well on and honestly I don’t think I’ll be able to find kangaroo around here so I guess rabbit it is he doesn’t do well with chicken or beef I’m really exited to get the recipe I hope it’s something that will help I’ve lost a lot of faith in vets these past two years so I guess I’ll find out how I feel about the board certified nutritionist I basically had to beg her for the home cooked diet she tried to talk me out of it for half the visit I didn’t budge though if I wanted canned food suggestions I would have figured that out myself so fingers really crossed on the home cooked
