Can someone please recommend the best probiotic for diarrhea? Max has IBD so he has diarrhea at times. He may also have a little intestinal virus right now. He started on Flagyl. I’ve stopped using fortiflora. Also let me know where to buy and how much to give please. Thanks!

Max and Ruby are having concurrent diarrhea bouts! Sorry to hear the poor guy isn't doing well. Jarrow's brand S boulardii with MOS is what you should get for diarrhea. MOS is a pre-biotic, non-digestible sugar that attracts bad gut bacteria. You can get it at Amazon or your local Vitamin Shoppe. I would avoid using the Flagyl as that kills any beneficial bacteria and can cause the opposite effect of constipation. I used to freak out whenever Ruby had diarrhea and would pop a flagyl in her but I've gotten used to the bouts and now just head straight for the S boulardii as she likes the taste of it in her food and is gentler than an antibiotic.

Okay thanks so much! I’m going to go ahead and order some! I was kind of hesitant about the Flagyl but that was all I had at the time. His vet gave me some pro-pectalin gel to use. She said it has a probiotic in it. Have you ever used this? Max goes back and forth between constipation and diarrhea. He will be constipated for a while then he gets better for a while, then starts diarrhea. It’s a continuous thing so I’m sure a good probiotic will help him. Thank you again!

Another thing I would suggest once he gets over this particular episode of diarrhea is to give him a probiotic called Visbiome. It's the most potent probiotic on the market and is recommended by veterinary GI specialists. I get it directly from the manufacturer. Start with very small amounts. I've built Ruby's dose to 1 capsule a day. It may help Max's GI issues and support his immune system overall.

A word about Visbiome - which I use for my kitty that has IBD+SCL.

Visbiome contains 112.5 billion CFU per pet capsule. The recommendation for cats is 5-10 billion CFU/kg/day. A 11 lb or 5 kg cat would get 25-50 CFU per day which works out to 1/4 to 1/2 capsule - of the pet version. In Canada you can't get the pet version so I give the pouches, which have 450 billion per sachet/pouch. With my slightly under 4 kg cat, that is 20-40 CFU per day 1/20th ish of a package per day. They go a long way! I use some of those tiny measuring teaspoons, about 1/2 of the one called a dash tsp.

Okay thanks. Do you only use the S. Boulardii for bouts of diarrhea then the Visbiome every day? @Katherine&Ruby

Yes, that's what I do. I also make sure when I give the probiotic that she gets some sort of prebiotic for it to work with, some source of fiber like slippery elm bark, psyllium, and pumpkin.
Sorry for all of my questions but what brand of psyllium or slippery elm bark do you get? Is that for use with the visbiome? Thanks so much!

NOW brand makes both and you get get them from Vitacost. I get the slippery elm in powder form and mix an ⅛ of a spoon in food, and the psyllium comes in capsules that I open up and also put into food along with the Visbiome. I vary the fibers I give to Ruby as they all have different nutritional profiles that I'd like her to benefit from. Slippery elm is best for kitties with GI issues as it's supposed to coat and soothe the GI tract. It's good for nausea and will help bind up the poop in case of diarrhea.
