12/14 Cali AMPS 77. BLOODWORK from 11/29 vet clinic excellent. Very positive remarks from veterinarian [will post If I can successfully]. Cali regained weight from 8.4lbs 1 year ago at diagnosis to 14.8 lbs. her food drive has kept her alive and prevented any hypos. Now I have Rx for meloxidyl for hip pain/arthritis. It is prescribed off label [usually for dogs in USA] at 1/2 dose given for dogs every 3rd day as needed. Just received RX so will update on results. Hopefully this will make her more mobile so I can manage her weight.
Merry Christmas to all and thanks for your support.
My updated spreadsheet will follow.

Glad to hear that her bloodwork was excellent.

The dog strength of meloxicam is 1.5mg/ml and for cats it is 0.5mg/ml which is ONE THIRD AND NOT HALF the dog strength. One of the reasons that meloxicam has a bad rep in the US is that vets are prescribing dog strength for cats.

The prescribed cat dose is 0.05mg/kg of body weight. Or 0.022 mg/lb of body weight. So at 14.8lb, Cali's dose of meloxicam is 0.33mg. If you have the dog strength meloxicam which is 1.5mg/ml, that would work out to 0.22ml. Has the vet asked you to give it every day?

I would suggest you get a 1ml syringe so you can measure the 0.22ml accurately.

Merry Christmas! :)

Thanks for your review Bhooma and merry Christmas to you.
I have both the larger and small syringes that came with the meloxidyl. The little syringe shows dog weight 1-14 pounds. I gave dosage for 7 Lb but can cut back to 5 Lb dosage since Cali is now 15 pounds. Also I was advised to give only as needed every 2 to 3 days. I am hopeful for positive results and will use judiciously.
How is you sweet sugar baby doing?

Hi Carla, please do not use the syringes that came with the meloxidyl - those are for dog doses - even the mg/lb will be much higher than for cats. Meloxicam can cause serious kidney issues in cats when improperly dosed.

Please buy a 1ml syringe and give her 0.22ml.

Hi Carla,

Just stopping in to say hi to you and your CA Cali. Nice to see you here and to read that great update from Cali's vet visit and bloodwork.

I hope the meloxidyl works well for her arthritis once you make the change in dose Bhooma notes in her message above. I don't know whether you've already tried Adequan but we've been giving it to Callie for her arthritis and I think it has really been helping.

Happy holidays! :)

Just lurking around the boards.

I would definitely look into the Adequan if you can. We started it about 6 months ago and it has done wonders. Makoto has pretty severe spondylosis and hip dysplasia, but has been able jump up to things without using something lower as a step up. I had ordered him steps to help him with getting up onto the bed, but gave it away and ordered him a cat tree/ lounger instead.

Thanks Bhooma. I sure don’t want kidney issues for Cali. Will definitely get 1ml syringe and dose appropriately. I have only given her 1 treatment so hopefully no long term effects.

Good morning Jessica and new York Callie. Happy holidays to you also. So good to hear from you. Can’t believe we have been on this site for over one year now. our Cali is doing great [STILL VERY MUCH A CALICO]. I am going to give this meloxidyl a try as it took so long to get it. But I will definitely keep the Adequan in mind. We give our horses Previcox, which is the dog version of Adequan but more economical. Ironically horses only get 1/2 dose of a dog’s dose because of their bodies’ ability to metabolize it. Strange how meds can be the same but react differently with different animals.

That is great news! Aren’t drugs wonderful if used correctly for our animals? Our Cali has regained all the weight she lost before diagnosis of diabetes last year. To the degree that I wanted to get her moving again to manage her weight. And it would sure help if she weren’t so “calico” personality to us and her new tuxedo brother. Merry Christmas and thanks for stopping by with the encouragement.

How is Ms. Callie doing? I haven’t been online regularly lately [although I document everything offline on clipboard] so I haven’t caught up. Hope she is stabilizing and giving you more rest these days. Cheers, Carla

That is really funny. Does it work well for your horses?

Callie is doing really well as far as her diabetes goes (anti-jinx!) She has had some other health issues flare recently but I am hopeful that we'll get her back to feeling good soon.

So glad your Cali is doing well. Callie is also still very much a calico with the tortitude to match!!

Happy to hear your Callie is doing well also.
Yes the Adequan [previcox] works very well for the horses. Both of my boys are seniors now [23 &29] but still sometimes act as if they are young colts. They also get a monthly shot of formulated Pentason. Both work well together for their joints. I don’t think they would still be here and healthy if not for these expensive drugs, but worth every penny.
