11/20 Help. Jade is trying to pee and can’t.

Well, I'm due to shoot in about an hour and not sure about dosing. Last night (see SS) was an unexpected green. i happened to wake up and she seemed a bit off so I decided to test. She was 75 at +5. Her nadir is typically +6 (so it seems). I can only presume she was going to go down further. i gave her a tiny bit og gravy and then mixed some in with her usual LC food and her numbers rose back up. I'm sure she will be well within a safe shoot number at AMPS but having it 75 and believing it was heading lower, do I stick with 1U? Today I can test at +3 and +5 before leaving for work for the night. Please advise as I shoot in 40 minutes. Thank You!

She hasn’t earned a reduction. If she’s going low at +5 you can feed a little mc or hc. She should be fine. That’s late enough in the cycle that she won’t go a lot lower and if I am wrong you can abort the cycle by leaving out hc.

Ok

I should not respond until I have my coffee. She did earn a reduction with SLGS. I was thinking TR. She is bouncing so it’s totally fine to shoot the old dose one time and in fact it’s called shooting through the bounce. That being said I made a mistake. :banghead: So .75 tonight.

As you know, I understand the need for :coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee: . I’ll update at +3 and +5.

I'm going to change my thread title now, thanks again for helping me! Side note; how can ANY vet say that there is absolutely no need to test? In fact, when I spoke to mine after Jades UTI diagnosis, she was a bit scolding for me having continued to test over the last week when she told me not to. I just don't get it.I hate to think of what may have happened if I had not happen to wake up when I did and test Jade to see that #.

I so agree. The funny thing is I was determined NOT to test when Max was diagnosed for fear I would hurt him and he would be hiding from me all the time. So I didn’t at first. I bought a meter just in case. My vet had me coming to see him twice a week for a nadir test. When Max tested 60 on his AT he said maybe he was going into remission and insulin was stopped. When I went back for a recheck after 3 weeks he went back on insulin. I brought in my meter to see if it worked and my vet handed me the needle to test. A testaholic was born that day.

Never a more appropriate time for the “better safe than sorry” cliche. Seriously. I don’t think I can even mention to her that I reduced the dosage. Isn’t that a shame?

Too common a story. Everyone here nods and smiles and keeps on following whichever method they choose. Some even make a second spreadsheet just for their vet. Should not be necessary. I’m lucky my vet sees himself as a partner with me even though he’s VERY experienced and a diplomat in internal medicine. I once told him I should have been a vet tech and his response was no, a vet. I dread when he retires.

Since Jade has come out of remission think about seeing if that’s due to the uti or not. If she still needs insulin TR might work better to get a second remission. No need to decide anything now. Just planting the seeds.

It's natural to think that a medical degree makes someone right about assessing health related issues. I was super afraid of going against what Ruby's vet suggested after her diabetes diagnosis because it was all so new to me and fairly frightening. What the FDMB has taught me is that it's true with almost everything except feline diabetes and nutrition. I have never met a vet with whom I agreed regarding the management of Ruby's diabetes after joining this forum. I listen to nearly everything Ruby's oncologist has to say about the care of her lymphoma, but I don't follow her guidance on insulin dosing or testing, and I don't feed Ruby any prescription diets. We've been seeing this oncologist pretty regularly for the past 5 months and the doctor knows enough now not to make any suggestions with my management of her diabetes as she sees Ruby's spreadsheet before every visit and she now trusts that I know what I am doing thanks to what everyone here, like @tiffmaxee, have taught me.

Thanks for that. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one. I hate having to withhold info or worse, lying to her. It’s put me in a very awkward and uncomfortable position. Especially since she’s become a friend to a certain degree.

I omit the fact that I am still feeding raw food to Ruby even though the oncologist told me not to. I tell her I feed Ruby Weruva, which I do, but I don't tell her that 85% of what she eats is raw because I believe from all of the research I have done that immune-compromised cats profit from raw feeding if the food is handled according to hygienic guidelines. Ruby is doing super well with regards to her lymphoma right now, so I feel good about the decisions I have made for her as her caregiver. Almost all vets, except for the holistic ones, are against raw feeding, just like most of them don't think testing glucose many times a day is a good idea.

You're getting some of the best advice there is to be had with regards to taking care of Jade. Follow your intuition and common-sense. Jade will do very well for it.

I don’t know what to do. She was just playing and eating . She’s on antibiotics for a UTI ( Thursday) she peed and pooped when I was at work and is now clearly in distress trying to pee ( everywhere) and can’t at all!!

I don’t think convenia is going to take care of of the uti. A culture should have been sen to the lab. If she’s blocked it is serious.

She’s not totally blocked if she peed. No crystals is good but there was bacteria right? Was it sent to be cultured? She must be in pain if panting. Max blocked when he was 5 and I near,y lost him because a vet pierced his bladder or it burst on its own. He had surgery and it was touch and go for a week.

Slight traces of bacteria. They said I caught it early. She’s panting from stress, not pain. She’s so scared when we have to come to any bet. It’s why we have one come to us.

Yes. She was absolutely fine and spunky when I came home from work. Ate, played and then started going in and out of the box. Very sudden.

How are things going.? It could be FLUTD. Sheba used to get bouts of that and couldn’t pee sometimes for a couple of hours. Then she’d start to pee little bits. FLUTD can be brought in by stress. It can be painful. Bouts usually last a couple of days

We just got home. Doc thinks it’s still the UTI. Her bladder is soft and mushy and she peed when he squeezed it so no blockage. She’s on a second antibiotic. Poor Jade.
