Good morning, while I expected a higher number this morning after that 61 yesterday, I wasn't expecting this. I'll keep to the 9u and, as usual, monitor him. Or, should we return to +10 and if so, what would decide that???

Is there anything I can do beyond what I'm already doing. I guess I have to remember it's a marathon, not a sprint...

Hold the dose, let's see what sort of nadirs he's getting once the bounce is over.

Ok, comfy pair of patient pants notwithstanding, what makes for such a loooooong yellow stretch? I'm asking because I'd like to understand: are the numbers reactionary because he went so low that [xyz insert here] is a compensation and an attempt to regulate? What is the xyz, then? :)

Find yourself a comfy pair of patience pants to hang out in.:)
:)

Who knows what makes for such a long yellow stretch lol but it's common! The "downside" is that may mean some fun tonight (law of the universe, everything with FD must happen at night so you lose sleep). It's a bounce, their bodies trying to calm down and re-adjust, let the insulin do its thing to bring them back down.

I am now learning the FD Some Fun Law of the Universe is almost always based in the nocturnal, to be sure.
Eeek. Adding to this fun will be the time-change tonight.:)

My questions (always questions, forgive me), will be about responding to his nadirs appropriately and, for this, I really do (and will) need the support here.

You're just trying to keep him safe, questions are never any trouble!

As we've mentioned, the best thing you can do is take reductions. I previously suggested a threshold of 75-80 on the AT - reason being looking at his data (this is speculation and I apologize if it adds confusion)
  • you could have reduced on 10/8 and he may not have gotten ahead of you on 10/10
  • 10/22 I'm theorizing he went low overnight resulting in that bounce, a reduction may or may not have helped. I suspect something similar on the 28th just didn't catch the low
  • Same thing with 11/1. A reduction might have slowed him down a bit.
Hes really moving down now so I'd definitely pick a reduction point and stick with it.

Ideally you aren't responding to nadir, you're trying to stay ahead of it. Early intervention with food can help slow drops, prevent bouncing, and prevent low numbers.

The general guideline I use is (again hoping this doesn't add confusion):

Get a +1 if the PS is unusually/unexpectedly low or dropping into PS

+2/+3 test - if rising outside meter variance (in your case for an AT, 15%) call it a night. If flat, test again in about 2 hrs. If not much drop then call it a day/night.

If dropping more than meter variance that's when it gets interesting and really depends on the BG and size of drop. Smaller drops nearing low blue generally feed a little LC, larger drops nearing low blue or lower generally a little MC. HC is only below 68 on an AT.

If seeing gradual drops, testing 1-2 hrs apart. Fast drops/low numbers 30-60 mins.

It turns out I shot you in the foot yesterday - had you feed the HC and karo at nadir, which sent him a little too high. It was a guess because I wasn't sure if he was near nadir or had a little more to go, and needed him out of those numbers. And he responds well to carbs, so now we know can probably give a little less.

We use nadirs to determine how or if we need to change the dose. It's always good to be able to answer the question "how low is this dose taking my cat?". We want to make sure the answer is not "too low". The rest of the numbers you see don't really matter much in terms of dosing. I see real progress in Eddie. In spite of a BCS dose the other night, and the low yesterday, he mostly seems to have kept his bounce to the higher yellows.

Nadirs can and do move around. Nadirs in bounce breaking cycles tend to be later, sometimes they'll be earlier when they are looking for a reduction. Some people are lucky enough to have cats that are pretty consistent in their nadir timing. I envied them. Neko's were all over the place, from +3.5 to +13 on Lantus.

Thank you @FrostD and @Wendy&Neko : this really, really helps me understand the territory I'm now in with Eddie. I was late getting back tonight but was really happy to see him at PMPS 153 after that yellow zone. You've also explained so well the subtleties of where Eddie is at and that helps me so much.

So, armed with your good words and the spread sheet and advice, we are at 9u tonight. I will check him before bed at +2 or +3 and I'm going to set alarm for tonight

Thank you so much for confirming and supporting all of Eddie's journey.

I am off to bed! Looks like he's breaking the bounce. Hopefully others are around tonight, but just in case -

If that next test is close to 100 I'd feed 1 tsp LC. Under that, 1 tsp MC unless he's really diving...in which case use your best judgment.

As for steering later in the cycle -
70s - I'd give bit of MC, retest in 30. I'd aim to keep him high 70s/low 80s minimum if you can. No food above 80 ish, need him hungry just in case he keeps dropping.
60s - Bit of HC. Retest in 30. Follow note above until in desired range.
50s or lower - HC + drop karo. Retest in 15 (to make sure karo working), and again after another 15 mins (to make sure food working as karo wears off). Follow notes above until in desired range (so if he bumps up to 60s no more karo, but a little more HC for example)

It's hard to pin where his nadir will be, like Wendy said it's often later in bounce breaks...in fact he might not have nadired yet from the AM shot (hello November 3rd again). So don't worry about sending him a little high, it's better to overcorrect and be safe vs fight low numbers for hours.

I suspect he's angling for another reduction, maybe not tonight but soon. Sunday mornings are a little slow here. Don't forget about the daylight savings time change if it applies to you, and if in doubt take a reduction/BCS.
