Hello everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve posted but I though I would update and also need some tips on a couple things.

Chubba has been doing pretty well! He’s gained his two pounds back plus one lol but he’s been a lot more active. He loves his new treats after his meals and doesn’t notice when I give him his shot. My vet said his current insulin dose is mostly working but that she wants to increase it to 2.5 units. I would need to blood test him though…

I’ve been having issues with him staying still for the prick on his ear. He sits still long enough for me to prick his ear and I’m able to get blood about half the time. When I try to get the blood either on the testing strip or my nail he won’t keep his ears still! Drives me bonkers because I can hold his ear fine it’s just after I prick him he’s like no ma’am. I even tried giving him extra treats but he gobbles it up so quick!

Also, he’s been on the methylcobalamin which has been working great! He started to walk on his tippy toes almost two weeks ago. Does anyone have any tips on how to get his hind legs stronger? The other day he wanted to jump on my bed and I was encouraging him but he gave up. I got his brothers food delivery yesterday and left the box out hoping he will be tempted to jump inside (it’s a small box). I was going to try helping him stand on his hind legs for a minute or so but I’m not sure if that would work. He’s able to jump on his cat scratchers since they are lower to the ground. He struggles to jump up on the bed though.

I don't know what to tell you about him not staying still after the prick , I can tag others to see if they have any advice

You said your vet wants to increase the Lantus to 2.5 units
How many units is he getting now
Since you don't have a spreadsheet set up and have no data I don't think members can suggest anything about the dose without any data

You really need to be testing him every day and night and during rack 12 hour cycle to see how the insulin is working for Chubba and how low he's dropping
God forbid the dose is too much , you don't want a hypo to happen

We track the numbers on the spreadsheet. I can tag Bhooma one of our members to set it up for you, she will contact you by private message look for it in your inbox above. She lives in India so she will probably contact you tomorrow some time

I will give you the link so you can read about how the spreadsheet works and the dosing methods for Lantus, you will need to pick one to follow.
This will tell you when you need to increase or decrease his dose
Since he is still eating dry food you will have to follow the SLGS Method

Please read about it

I assume you are giving him Zobaline after reading your previous post
Until you get him better regulated , which we don't know if he is yet because of no spreadsheet , the Methyl B-12 probably won't help much

I saw a big improvement in about 3 months with my cat, he's now 100% better
If you are using Zobaline and want to save a lot of money , I know it's expensive
A lot of us use the Vitacost Brand
One per day empty the capsule into his wet food and always add some water
https://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-vitamin-b-12-methylcobalamin-5000-mcg-100-capsules-6

14.49 for 100 capsules

I will thank you!

He’s getting 2 units of Lantus. His last vet appointment the vet said his levels were better but still high. I would have to ask her what the actual number was for the frustosamine test he had because I forgot. She suggested maybe giving him 2.5 units and we agreed to try it one once one day while I was home so I could watch him. He actually did okay but it’s been about two weeks and I have been giving him his regular dose since then.

I would love to test him I just can’t get him to stop moving lol. It’s like he knows because I can touch his ears just fine it’s when I prick him he’s like no more touching.

Thanks for the info!

I bought the Vitacost brand. His legs have improved but until I can figure out how to get him to sit still while I test his blood sugar I don’t think he’ll be jumping anytime soon.

When I first used the capsules the little booger was able to tell something was different. I ended up making a little gravy for him by mixing the contents of the capsule, water, and his lickable treats. I pour it over his food. He loves it.

Here is the link on how the spreadsheet works. We also increase by 0.25 units at a time not half units.
Do you have the syringes with half unit markings, it makes it easier to adjust the doses
Just want to be sure you are giving him his insulin twice a day

I can tag a few members for you to see if they have any tips

@Bron and Sheba (GA)

@tiffmaxee

@Wendy&Neko

She hasn't been able to test because of this

Purina DM dry is around 12-18% too high , BUT I WOULD NOT STOP ITsince you are not home testing. If you can start testing and get him off the dry you have to do it gradually bcause it can drop his BG 100 points
Here is an article on transitioning dry food addicts to wet.
Have you seen this, by Dr. Lisa Pierson?http://felinediabetes.com/TipsforTransitioningPDF12-18-09.pdf

I’ve been slowly I’m giving him less dry food over time. He loves the wet food so he gets more of that. Before he would get about half a cup of dry food throughout the day and now he’s down to about a quarter cup. He likes to nibble so that’s why I have it on hand. If I’m at work my brother feeds them and those days he typically only has wet food. I was just worried about his weight cause he got pretty tiny and then I was worried about his blood sugar dropping too low if he didn’t eat throughout the day but he’s been doing well on the days he doesn’t get dry food.

Thanks for the article! I skimmed it but I’m gonna go back and read it and take notes in his little diet journal I made for him lol

There are low carb options in dry food as well – Young Again, Dr. Elsey’s Cleanprotein (chicken flavour) and Wysong Epigen 90.

Will send you a PM for the spreadsheet.
