10/28 - Leo seeing high #s, could it still be bounces?

I started Leo back on Lantus Saturday. His numbers have been all over the place but still over 200. The lowest I have gotten is 234. We have gotten some 200's but mostly 300s and some jumps into the 400s again. That was one thing with Vetsulin at the 5 unit dose, we were seeing some 200s but not the high jumps.

I am trying to make sure he eats around the 2-3 hour mark in case it's a hard drop. I find his lowest is usually around 5-6 hours, and sometimes the 8-hour mark.

I did a .25 unit increase after 4 days since he has been on 5 units of Lantus before and we were seeing around the same #'s if not lower the time before. This morning was the 2nd AM dose at 5.25 units.

Are the jumps into the 400's bounces? Is it that maybe his numbers are getting lower before I check them? I really don't like seeing those jumps.

Also, should I keep the 5.25 units for 5 days if he is still seeing these numbers are should I increase after 3 days if we are still seeing mid 200+ numbers?
 
Did you dose last night. You didn’t put it on your ss. Try to be patient. I know it’s hard but the depot needs to build. Evaluate after 6 cycles. It doesn’t look to me like bouncing.

I did dose the same 5.25 units last night, I just didn't enter it online.
If those aren't bounces then I was getting a much better response when he was on Vetsulin. I am almost to the point of just not doing anything. His numbers when he was diagnosed were the same as they are now and that was without changing food and doing the insulin injections. I don't see where anything we have tried has made a positive difference. He has now been back on Lantus for 6 days and I am seeing worse numbers than when he was on it before. At least on the 5 units of Vetsulin he had more 200s and didn't have the high jumps into the 400s. Maybe the vet was right and I should have stayed on Vetsulin and just increased the dose. When I look at his spreadsheet, Lantus is the only one that makes him have jumps into the 400s???
 
Lantus is a depot insulin. It takes about 7 days for the depot to build. You stopped giving it so the depot needs to build. My opinion is you need to give it time. It is so much better than Vetsulin for cats.

At first I took a little offense to the patience pants comment but @Wendy&Neko just referenced a post about New Dose Wonkiness and it talks about patience pants. She does think these numbers are a bounce. Hopefully it will work its way out soon. I am testing fairly regularly trying to catch downward numbers but I am not seeing a huge drop anywhere but I guess it could be a quick drop enough that his body thinks something is too low.
 
I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you. It’s just the fd didn’t just start. You jumped from Vetsulin to lantus to Vetsulin to Vetsulin not giving lantus a fair shot in my opinion. I know how frustrating it is. I was able to get Max tightly controlled but I caught his feet early and yet could never get him into remission probably due to his chronic pancreatitis. It’s frustrating I know. Let’s see if we can get Leo feeling better and in better numbers.
I didn’t see any indication of him being lower than usual but Wendy is right that a quick drop can cause a bounce too. Hang in there.

It's ok. Once I read that post I knew what you meant. It is very frustrating trying to listen to the vet but it seems they all have different opinions. I have read a lot of information about Lantus being the best insulin and wish I had kept him on that instead of listening to the vet. There is only 1 other vet in town and I guess I will have to take Leo to her. She is at the old practice I went to and it a fairly new vet. She did say she likes Lantus and wants to see him in the 150 range during the day. It's just really hard to get an appointment with her and it's usually a week out. I guess if Leo seemed to be in an emergency situation they would of course work us in.
In addition to Leo I also have another kitty with a long-term issue that requires meds and until the end of last year I also had a kitty with a heart condition and cancer that required twice daily meds and monitoring at the vet. It can all be a little overwhelming when you want to do what is best for them, but sometimes it's not clear what that is.
