Bella - Low BG Transitioning from W/D to FF Classics

Good Evening, (I also posted this earlier in the FB Group) If I didn't do the tests myself, I wouldn't believe them... any thought on why such a low this afternoon? The only difference in today's activity is that Bella laid outside in the sun after several days of rain. Breakfast was FancyFeast Classic Turkey & Giblets and a small amt of W/D. She did not present with any odd behavior. I fed her (FF and Hill Dry W/D) right after the BG of 54. (Note: I tested low BG in 20-30 min increments). We are in the process of transitioning away from Hills W/D to FancyFeast Classics. Should I be adjusting her Vetsulin Dosages?

You are jumping all around with dose. Don't base the dose on the preshot. It's doses based on how low the cat goes. She went too low on 3 u. I would reduce to 2.75 and HOLD THAT DOSE unless she earns another reduction.

One thing to bear in mind though when you’re transitioning from dry to wet - do so gradually and be aware that wet food has a much lower carb content than dry, so may well lower bg on its own
It is recommended to do a food switch gradually.
Also for your hypo kit when Bella drops too low
Do you have any med carb and high carb in the house and honey

Just want to be sure that you are waiting 30 minutes after Bella eats to shoot Vetsulin
You need to do this because Vetsulin drops hard and fast

Hi Diane, Thank you very much for the link. I read a similar article last night and if I am understanding correctly, the "slowness" and gradual transition from dry to wet is so the cat will eat it right? Or is it harmful to stop carbs cold-turkey? Bella loves Fancy Feast and it is what she used to eat prior to the vet prescribing dry W/D. Since she will happily eat the wet, is there any reason to continue feeding the kibble, aside from the fact that the low-carb will significantly lower her BG, which we discovered yesterday. I realize there are a lot of moving parts and really appreciate your help.

Also you need to be testing more after the PMPS to see how low Bella is dropping.

Thank you for the link :) I updated the signature to include the diagnosis date. We are working to increase evening tests.

Hi Kim, the reason is that when you start cutting out the dry food which is most likely high carbs your cats BG could suddenly drop by 100 points.
You can cut out the dry food as long as you test Bella @+2 during the day cycle also since Vetsulin drops their BG hard and fast.
Here is your previous post you did and members telling you about Vetsulin, not the best choice, and we suggested other insulin's that bare more gentle

Kim a suggestion on your spreadsheet in the remarks column when you feed can you please put @+2 or @ +5. Or whenever instead of putting the actual time, we are all in different time zones, plus in case you ever have to look back to see what you fed ,example med carb to bring Bella's number up you can see what you did and when

Thank you much. I will do as you recommend with the spreadsheet and can see how that makes sense. Also, I am understanding that Vetsulin is not the favorite and will discuss changes with the vet once I gain sufficient understanding and documentation of Bella's BG readings. There is much to comprehend and I will need a few days to take it all in.
