Well, Niki spent the day in the ER because he was acting a bit off. Not a lot was found, except trace ketones in his urine that the vet didn’t seem too concerned about. Came home with doxy - a stronger dose than he had been on previously.

So this morning, his AMPS is 138. The AB have lowered his BG in the past…

so any suggestions on his dose? We are holding now.

thank you so much!

Hi Nancy,

With SLGS and that blue number you hold the dose, so you stay at 1.25. How's his eating?

He is eating like a champ, and surfing the counters for food.

Thank you! I was very confused as to what we do - hold the dose advice (from the stickies) versus “how to handle a low AMPS” on that same stickie.

thank you for clarifying it! It’s just so scary when we are gone all day for work.

Wow, while we were waiting until +2, his BG went to 451. Sheesh.

thanks!

have a great day!

With SLGS, you can shoot any number above 90 and with blue nadirs you hold the dose. Resist the temptation to change the dose based on a preshot number. As you can see from today, he bounced, so it’s good that you gave him the 1.25 as he needed it.

I see that your kitty is already bouncing this morning - so you've gotten some great advice already above about shooting and the lowest number - you may want to write that down near your test area so you can get a reminder; no shot below 90 on SLGS.

I also suspect that Niki went lower last night. Anytime you see a drop of more than 100 points you will want to set an alarm and check again to see if she's still dropping. Unfortunately kitties do their best work at night often and just when you need to sleep they want to dive dive dive. So please set an alarm next time she drops more than 100 points - last night was a perfect example. From 352 to 215 is a huge drop! Get another test because Niki isn't going to tell you that she's continuing to go down to the lagoon...and with not knowing how low she's going it's impossible to determine if there's any need to adjust the dosage (based on nadirs)...

Hope this information is helpful.

Thank you both! The info is so very helpful.

That are both great rules of thumb - no shot below 90 and testing again when he drops by 100 points or more. We are used to being up all night when his PMPS reading seems low, but we didn’t have a good handle on how to test when he drops so much in one drop. It’s written down now!

I am able to work from home today so I will be testing more than usual!

It’s so hard to tell what is causing all these ups and downs - the inflammation, the wound, his mammary leakage, the antibiotics, etc. vet thinks it might be an adrenal gland problem that is complicating everything, as it can cause the mammary issues as well as make him difficult to regulate. we were able to get an ultrasound appt for later this week that may guide future treatment and help with all the issues, including the diabetes issue (hopefully!)

Thanks so much!

It is hard to determine with so much else going on - but the first thing you'll want to know - how low is he actually going at those times when he appears to take those big drops - where does it stop and level off? Without that answer it's going to be harder to determine if the other issues are factoring into the higher numbers - my first thought is let's rule out when he hits bottom and how low is he actually going when he starts down that road???

Yes! I will get readings today every couple of hours (and more frequently if he is going super low). We haven’t done a real curve in awhile… probably because he gets poked and prodded and medicated so frequently we feel bad for him. But we need to get a handle on this, even if we are in waiting mode for all the other issues.

thank you!

No need to poke him a lot if he doesn't take a big dive (100 points or more)...he looks like he's in a bounce right now...that could last all day...

You can probably take it a little easy on the testing today since he's gone so high. Save those tests for lower numbers.

If your question has been answered you can take the question mark off your thread title. :)

ETA: Sue: great minds! ;)

I’m sure he will appreciate not being poked so much today but I did it before I read your last posts. +4 = 433

I’ll check again at +7 to see how it’s going.

I did take the question mark off the title.

have a great day and THANK YOU

Nancy
