Hello from Bella and I! We became family about 10 years ago and I guess her age to be 11 yrs. She chose me and has been an extraordinary companion. Bella was diagnosed with diabetes and prescribed Vetsulin 2 years ago (Current dose is 3-1/2 BID). We are happy to be here and take a more proactive role in her health. Just learning to home-test and become efficient with obtaining the BG sample. Will apologize now for learning curve on site navigation and process. Lots to learn :)

Welcome to the FDMB! Bella is a gorgeous girl!! Great job getting your signature up and the spreadsheet going too!

Vetsulin is unfortunately, not a very good insulin for most cats and from the data you have already, you can see why. It tends to hit hard and fast and then wear off before the next shot is due. Also, if she's been on it for over 2 years and isn't better controlled than that, it's time to try a different type of insulin. Vetsulin is called Caninsulin in the rest of the world (which is a good hint to which species it works best in...Canine's!)

Lantus, Basaglar and Levemir are all human insulin's that work very well in cats. They're expensive in the US, but most of us buy ours from Canada where it's 1/3 to 1/2 the price. Here is some information on Buying insulin from Canada

ProZinc is a veterinary insulin that works better in cats too. It's available at Chewy for about $110 but although the human insulin's may be more expensive up front, they also last longer and end up costing about half as much per unit.

The 2018 AAHA Guidelines on diabetes management recommends Glargine (Lantus/Basaglar) and ProZinc for cats. Maybe if you provide your vet with them, they'll agree to let you try something else.

I've thrown a lot of information at you! Feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Hello and welcome. I have a fondness for the tuxies. :) Good for you in learning how to home test.

Semglee is another newer glargine biosimilar insulin, that is cheaper in stores. My girl started on Caninsulin too, but it didn't last long enough in her. We have dosing methods here than may help you to get her better regulated.

You can use this
Semglee, it is a generic Lantus, and was approved by the FDA last June. The cost is compatible with Lantus from Canada.

Here is a coupon above take a look at the price
Just call any pharmacy to see if they have the 5 pens, they will last you a year or more

If you decide to switch insulin's down the road we can help you with that and more information about lantus and different syringes you would need to use

You would buy different syringes and insert the syringe into the rubber stopper and draw out the insulin from the pen

Thank you very much for sharing. Right now I feel like an appreciative sponge absorbing all the information. I am interested to see how Bella's BG numbers change once she is free from the Hill's W/D. We are in transition back to Fancy Feast, but also considering making homemade. Lots to do :) Thank you again for reaching out and sharing this with us.
