Hi! This is my first post, but also a post to express my infinite gratitude to all the people in this forum.
I've been reading and following your advice since August, when my cat was diagnosed.
Today, we're honeymooning.
One day I found him very apathic and with foam all over his mouth. They ran some tests and found out he had had high sugar levels. It took a whole weekend at the vet to stabilize his sugar levels.
I changed from vet because I spotted some red flags mentioned in the forum.
This new one started right away with 2 units of caninsulin every 12 hours and a weekly sugar monitoring. (I wasn't able to test his sugar levels at the beginning and our priority was not to upset him too much). I know there are some concerns about that kind of insulin, but my vet has treated cats with both Lantus and Caninsulin, and since Mini was being responsive, we stuck to that.
At the same time I started a wet diet with dry just in case he ran out of wet. To be honest, once I started feeding him wet food, he barely touches the dry kibbles. So, since I started the treatment I have fed him Animonda Protect for Diabetics and Hill's m/d.
Now to the good part. We have been reducing the insulin, week after week until we reached half a unit every 12 hours. I'm able to make glucose tests now and we have found out that he doesn't need any insulin for now.
I want to know what are thoughts on this. Isn't it too fast for a recovery? Maybe he wasn't diabetic?
Anyway, I'm really happy and thankful for all your advice.

Welcome.

There are diet controlled diabetic cats. You will have to stick to low carb food. Once a diabetic, always a diabetic.

If you can post some of Minimini's numbers, we can give you a better idea of whether or not he is in a strong remission.

I'm so sorry for replying this late.
When I first posted this I didn't have many numbers, he has quite a temper, but now he has got used to be tested.
Today I made a glucose curve test after all these weeks without insulin and 3 days after changing to a regular diet of wet food with 11% protein, no carbs, no sugars. These are the results:
Before eating: 90
3 hours: 80
6 hours: 91
9 hours:89
12 hours: 90
When they told me he was diabetic (20th of August) the numbers of the fructosamine test were 595 umol/L
They sedated him, though.
31th took him to the new vet and the glucose test gave 148 mg/dl
7th of September 111mg/dl
Then we started home testing and his levels have been pretty much the same as the above glucose curve.

I would say he was a diabetic…. And even though he is no longer in insulin… he will always be a diet controlled diabetic so always feed him low carb food.
It is not unusual for a diabetic cat, to have a diet change and be given insulin, to go into remission.

How long since he has had any insulin? I would test everyday for 2 weeks morning and night before he’s fed and post his results. That will tell us if he’s in remission.

22 days without insulin. I couldn't test him everyday because I'm only at home during weekends, and his other caretaker wasn't able to test him. We just had to do with looking closely for any symptoms and testing in the weekends.

How did you manage when he was on insulin?
When he was on insulin, I didn't even have the glucometer. Long story short, it was pretty difficult to find a decent one here since Covid.
Until then, I had to take him every week to the vet to take blood samples. When I got the glucometer, it took me two weekends to get the knack of it.
But when I started to test, his sugar levels were ok, I texted his vet and he told me to stop the insulin, we were giving him 0'5 units every 12 hours by then, so it wasn't too risky to try.

I guess all you can do it test when you can, make sure he’s eating well and if the numbers start going up, post here for advice.
The BG numbers should stay around 50-100 if he’s not on insulin and he is in remission
