Were back after remission 1.5ish years ago
This morning at the vet he was given 2 units of Vetsulin, his amps was 4?? Dr said it was in the lower 400's but I cant remember exactly what it was. Hes home now and finally being able to relax. Pmps is 282. I do not feel comfortable giving him 2 units since this will be an over night dose and his first dose at home since coming out of remission. I sadly dont have any data on him from the first round because I didnt start home testing until we had a hypo episode.

Should I drop down to 1.5 since its night or what do you suggest??

Are you able to stay up and monitor if needed? Plenty of test strips? Hypo kit?

I would not give 2U, but the dose I suggest would be based on the answer to those questions.

With Vetsulin, it is usually recommended to start off with a low dose of not more than 1.0u twice a day. If feeding low carb diet, starting dose would be 0.5u.

Beginner's Guide to Vetsulin
He is still on the low carb diet from the first round. I reminded the dr that he tanked on 2 units last time after a bit. I knew his numbers would be no where near what they were getting at the vet once he got home. They were also feeding him WD dry... If I remember right he was only on insulin maybe a couple months tops before going into remission.

I will be up till 11 maybe midnight. I do not feel comfortable at all giving him 2 units, even if it was during the day. Its time for his shot now. Im thinking I should just do 1 tonight to play it safe then see what hes at before I go to bed and of course in the morning.

1U is probably ok, but if he shows a big drop at your before-bed test you'd need to feed him a little (HC vs Ms vs LC depending on how big the drop is and when in the cycle) and set an alarm to get back up. If you're unable to do that, then Im not comfortable making any suggestion unfortunately. Not a lot of data, and Vetsulin can be very harsh.

Since Vetsulin can be so harsh I think Ill just do .5 tonight since he is already on a low carb diet. I will test him again before I go to bed and make sure he eats some more. If I need to stay up then I will. I know weve been through this before, I just feel so overwhelmed.

Thank goodness I listened to my gut and came here for advice. +2 and he was at 79... He ate some Dr Elsey's and drank some water. I'll check him again shortly. He's in that picky phase not wanting his fancy feast.... I'll get some Forti flora tomorrow to see if that helps.

I'm glad you listened to your gut. That is some big drop.
Can you put the date in on your spreadsheet 10-22-21 when you get a chance.
I hope you can get his numbers up
Do you have any Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers if needed?
Biscuits is adorable. :cat:

Phew really glad you didn't give 2U

When you see drops like that and give medium or high carb food, you really do need to keep testing every 30-60 minutes. You're not out of the woods until he's rising on his own after 2 hours without food, this is doubly true with Vetsulin.

Yes, please do go get a range of food.

Since he dropped below 90, this earned a reduction, so your new dose is 0.25U. We only recommend giving a shot if he's above 200,, below that stall and post for advice. If you cannot be around to monitor him tomorrow during the day, I'd consider skipping in the morning
