Now, I feel sick inside. Mikey has been on 2.5 for two days and he got a 563 reading. He has never been in the 500’s . He is a bouncer. Could the Lantus be too old? It has been refrigerated and is 90 days old?

Why would he go so high? I took a 2nd reading and it was higher! I understand that a new dose could cause bouncing but that is quite a jump.

He eats 4 cans of PP a day as he is a tad thin and hungry? Too much

Where is Bandit’s Mom?

Thanks,
Thomas

I don't think Lantus is too old - if it was old, he wouldn't be coming back down into the blues. Just looks like bouncing to me! New dose, could have taken him lower than that 142 today, bounced back up

Looks like he's already on his way down pretty fast - can you get a +4?

As for the food - what is his ideal weight, and what's current weight?

Which dosing method are you following? I don't see it on your spreadsheet or your signature. If you're following SLGS, you're obliged to hold the dose for 7 days, especially if you're getting blue nadirs. I know it's really upsetting to see a black number but remember we're looking at overall trends, not static numbers.

Anything else going on with him aside from being hungry?

He weighs about 10 lbs., looking for him to be about 12 lbs

Thanks

Yes, I am doing SLGS. He just started the 2.5 after more than 7 days. He is coming down now! This was my first black number and I kind of freaked!

He is active, drinking well, using liter box, playful, goofy as usual and manipulating me for his Pure Bite freeze dried chicken treats

Ok. For weight gain, they need about 1.7 times as many calories. A 12 lb cat at ideal weight needs somewhere around 230-250 calories per day...so 1.7*230 is about 390 calories total minimum. Factoring in that he's a somewhat unregulated diabetic, he may need more than that.

What happens if you free feed him? Does he have a good appetite?

He loves his food, a member of the clean plate club. He also eats PureBites Freeze Dried treats. Wow, I was thinking 4 cans was too much!

thanks

Yes let him eat as much as he wants! My cat was going through about four 5.5oz cans a day when he was underweight/unregulated.

He will be very excited as he loves his Fancy Feast!

My Luci loves her food too! She was always underweight so I free-fed her and allowed her to eat as much as she wanted. None of this 'twice a day' feeding for that girl! After her I-131 procedure in January she's gained a bit too much weight IMO, so I've had to downsize her portions a bit - can't let her think I'm denying her any of her FF pates.

Don' worry so much about those bouncy numbers - takes them a while to get used to 'normal' numbers and his body is just reacting by dumping all that stored up glycogen from his liver into his bloodstream as it perceived an emergency situation. It'll get better over time.

When I first rescued him a year ago, he was a picky eater, but now he loves it all, especially treats. I dare not say that word or he will hit me with his begging eyes and pleading cries. These treats are expensive, but he is worth it.
So many folks have said to chill about the bouncing numbers, but the first time ever black baffled me.
The kid has just brought me his da bird toy, so off I am at 6:40 am to play! Lol

He is a tad underweight, maybe a pound or 2. But he would not be called emaciated , so I feed him 4 cans a day of FF as noted and PureBites freeze dried treats which I call kitty crack.

But I am a bit resistant to feeding him more since he is not grossly underweight. Thanks for the link.

He bounced again today to 596. But I fed him PurinaOne Grain Free Pate as the stores had no Pate . Wonder if that had to do with it.

He had a super steep drop from PMPS to +3 last night. Steep drops can cause bounces. I might have set an alarm for a later test too, it's possible he went even lower last night.

I will check him later in the night. Set an alarm . It feels odd because I have never seen black numbers until the 2.5 switch The first reading at PMPS just said HI, so that was a shock.
