Last month I learned that Peaches has kidney disease (to go with her diabetes) and changed her diet to Hills k/d and Purina ProPlan NF. We knew her BG values would rise and that the transition from low carb to low protein needed to be gradual (full transition on9/6/21). In my signature block, you can see from her spreadsheet that her BG numbers are not close to being controlled, even with a slow and gradual increase of insulin.

She has a follow up visit with her vet at the end of October. She has pretty good quality of life, for an old kitty. She drinks a little too much and pees too much. But her weight has definitely climbed since changing her food and she seems less frail.

Should I just keep doing what I'm doing? You can see that despite the consistently high sugars, she still manages to occasionally have a much lower than usual test at shot time to keep me on my toes. I welcome thoughts of those who've been down this road and know what I can reasonably expect. Thank you.

Hi Renee I'm going to tag @JanetNJ for you to take a look at your SS ,
With stage 2 kidney disease you need to be feeding foods with low phosphorus and low carbs
Do you have a copy of the labs

I can list some of the wet foods for you and see what @JanetNJ has to say

First number is carb percentage, second is mgs of phosphorus/100 cals, all less than 10% carb and less than 250 mg phos:

Weruva Truluxe Steak Frites can 6% 118
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen La Isla Bonita can 3% 166
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Pates Meowiss Bueller pouch 7% 174
Weruva Truluxe Glam 'N Punk can 0.6% 180
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Fowl Ball can 4% 180
Weruva Classic Pates Jeopurrdy Licious pouch 4% 187
Weruva Classic Pates Family Food pouch 0% 191
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Pates Cattyshack pouch 9% 211
BFF PLAY Tuna & Salmon Shhh... pouch 3% 223
BFF PLAY Tuna & Turkey Totes! pouch 2% 226
BFF PLAY Tuna & Chicken Chill Out pouch 2% 226
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Pates Cat to the Future pouch 8% 235
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Pates The Breakfast Cat pouch 9.7% 235
Weruva Classic Pates Meal of Fortune pouch 8% 236
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Lamburgini can 8% 236
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Double Dip can 8% 248

You want carbs under 10% and phosphorus ideally low 200's or less.

I'm not sure why your vet is suggesting a low protein diet. That's very old school thinking. It may be more of an issue if the CKD is more advanced than Stage 2. I have a Stage 2 kitty and he eats a largely raw diet. His kidney levels have been fine since the initial jump in his creatinine and SDMA. They are both normal range. Add water to Peaches' food if you're not doing so already.

Not having Peaches BG better controlled is hard on her kidneys. It will cause the kidney disease to progress. Either you need to increase the amount of insulin or decrease the amount of carbohydrates in her diet.

There is wonderful information on diet that's in Tanya's CKD site. If you've not seen her website, it is a wonderful resource for info on feline CKD and there's also a message board.

Hi! Can you post the labs? Unless your cat is end stage ckd she doesn't need low protien food. What you want is low carb and low phosphorus. My diabetic was ckd and I feed her weruva foods under 10 percent carb and under 1 percent phosphorus.

Weruva slide and serve pate foods Family Food (.97 phosphorus and 0 carb).

Jeopurrdy Chicken (0.97 P 6.1 carb)

What a Crock 0.71 phosphorus and 8 carb lots of gravy so she loved it.

Weruva Steak Frites (0.57 phosphorus 5.5 carb although I take out any big pieces of potatoes to try to limit the carbs just a bit)

Weruva LA isla Bonita - phosphorus 0.77 carb 4.5 (used to like, not a favorite anymore)

Glam and punk 1% carb, 0.93 phosphorous.
