10/1 Templeton AMPS 384 +4 251 +8 73 +9 58 +10 104 PMPS 118 +1 155 +2 177 +3 167

He is peeing every 5 minutes, 1/2 dollar sized, blood present in urine, pH high, Leukocytes 500+
Can someone remind me what antibiotics are good for UTI that aren't Clavamox?
I can't find my notes somehow and I have to get him in quick.

Tina has had great luck with Zenequin . . . . . when Clavamox did nothing.

Thank you! Clavamox is what the vet always prescribes and it creates poopy disasters for 2-3 weeks.

@Suzanne & Darcy What would you recommend?

I really hesitate to give antibiotics but I think it might be necessary at this point with my urine strip results and the fact he's a male kitty...

I am sooo cautious with a male kitty - glad you've caught this.
Also, Z worked on two different types of bacteria Tina had.

And, D Mannose is great, but only for E Coli infections (according to my vet, and some prior checking).

I've been loading him up with D-Mannose for the past week because he's been in higher numbers. I thought it worked differently, but I'll look into that when this is dealt with. We have been getting cranberry in him since noon when he started peeing 1/2 dollars every 5 minutes.

Did you do C&S to figure out what it was before getting prescribed Z?
Every damn time we pay $280 for C&S it's negative.

Looks like the cranberry perhaps helped flush him a bit and last test result came back completely normal. LK lower to normal levels, protein negative, blood negative, SG back to normal.
Hopefully his vet can get him in, if not, it's off to the ER we go.

ETA: and pH back to 5.

Both times after we began the Zeniquin, we waited for cultures, and learned it was the best antibiotic. Yes the cost is nuts!!

She fit him in after-hours last time I called with the same exact test results, she's great like that.
That is great - I hope you get a call soon.

If the URI was caused by E Coli, then the D Mannose will help. Just wanted to be clear . . . females are a bit more anatomically likely to get E Coli. My first culture on Tina showed E Coli, AND another bacteria unaffected by D Mannose. Second time around, it was a completely different bacteria, which Zeniquin also worked on.

If your vet cannot fit you in, what about asking for Zeniquin, for example, to pick up now to get something started?
Best would be if Templeton could be seen!!

I’m sorry Templeton isn’t feeling well :( hopefully you will be able to get into the vet or at least get him started on some meds.

Fascinating. Good information thank you so much for this.
While you were waiting for the C&S results, did you just wait with no antibiotics?

I tried the "can you give him a script" route, no go. She was ok with it last time, but it's been so long she wants to see him.
At first they said they could get him in on Monday, but mentioning blood in urine and protein high seemed to open up a slot tomorrow at noon.
As his urine is now coming out normal and amount is higher, we've decided to do that vs ER tonight.

Your boy is going to be ok BECAUSE you are on top of it! Obviously if he says you need to go to the ER, listen to him!

So sorry I wasn't more clear. Tina DID start the Zeniquin, both times, before the results of the culture came back. The most recent time, I also saw blood in urine. Her newest vet at our long term clinic is very in tune with all her issues, and sees us often, due to our other pets too.

It is smart to not over use antibiotics, so I do see your vet's point.
Prayers for gorgeous Templeton to feel better by tomorrow evening if not sooner! Gee, once again, if he gets worse over the next few hours . . . consider the ER again.

@tiffmaxee Do you think Templeton is safe until his 9am appt in the morning? UTIs in boys are extra worrisome. He has been peeing very small amounts frequently, and Joey has some test results listed above.

What's really weird, is we ground up some old prescription dry food (31%) and sprinkled it over the cranberry to entice him to eat it, at about +6, and I got a test at +8 and he was 78. Is there a correlation between infection and low blood sugar? I was expecting to completely screw his cycle with the HC, and instead he was much lower than expected.

I was wondering, not starting an antibiotic would be strange, gotcha, that makes sense.

Thanks for the well-wishes. He is peeing normal amounts now. I will continue to test and if it progresses, we will take him to the ER. It's a slight risk, but we are willing to take it as the ER is well, the ER...

Wow, super unexpected!
Right? 251 at +4 really doesn't mesh with 73 at +8.
Maybe there's a connection. It's funny, looking at my notes, the last time he got wonky test results/UTI he also dove low. Now of course he's always capable of diving, we know that for sure ;)

This is for a UTI, right? I recommend Zeniquin for UTIs. I have used it successfully in several cats with UTIs. Once a day dosing. Small oval shaped pill that’s easy to get down. Never have nausea or vomiting problems or diarrhea.

Did you get anything. I don’t know what time zone you are in. I just saw this. I have several cats who get explosive diarrhea on Clav and others who can take it. I am glad you caught this early since a blockage is so dangerous.

Jan is correct. D-Mannose is helpful in preventing UTIs but only if they are caused by e Coli!

Yup, suspected UTI, all the symptoms. The votes are in, Zeniquin it is!

Yes, explosive diarrhea indeed. I have never seen him run so fast as to the bathroom on Clav.
I hope I caught it early, I feel like a bad mom, I haven't tested his pee in a few days. Family in town and MIL birthday AND high blood sugar, I should have tested it sooner.

You can only stretch yourself so thin! Hope he feels better soon! Hang in there!

This is the cranberry we've been sneaking in his food since noon today.

It is not "scrumptious beef" as the description claims.
But it is what I had on hand. If anyone has suggestions for palatable cranberry, I'm all ears.
I’ve never had luck getting my cats to eat cranberry anything. And I was giving it to a cat I had some years ago with kidney disease and found out it is not good for them because it’s too acidic! So I quit trying.
